What is
Natural Disaster?
At the beginning…
 A natural disaster is the highly harmful impact on a society or
community following a natural hazard event.

 Natural disasters are catastrophic events with atmospheric, geological, and

hydrological origins (e.g., droughts, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes,
landslides) that can cause fatalities, property damage and social
environmental disruption
DROUGHTS

A drought is a period of drier-than-normal conditions. A drought can last for days, months or years.
Drought often has large impacts on the ecosystems and agriculture of affected regions, and causes
harm to the local economy.
EARTHQUAKES

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of
energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves.
TYPHOON & FLOODS

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that develops An overflow of water onto normally dry land. The

cyclones.
HURRICANE

A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles
per hour or more. The eye of a storm is usually 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400
miles. The dangers of a storm include torrential rains, high winds and storm surges.
The difference in their names is purely geographic.
In the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific oceans, the term
'hurricane' is used, whereas in the Northwest Pacific Ocean
they are called 'typhoons'.
Which is stronger typhoon or hurricane?
Differences in Intensity. Typhoons are generally stronger than hurricanes.
This is because of warmer water in the western Pacific which creates better
conditions for development of a storm. This unlimited amount of warm water
also makes for increased frequency of typhoons.
LANDSLIDE

A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope. Landslides
are a type of "mass wasting," which denotes any down-slope movement of soil and rock under the
direct influence of gravity.

Do’s and Don'ts
during Natural
Disaster
Do's and Don't During Disaster
 DROP, COVER & HOLD Stay away from windows, bookcases, bookshelves,
heavy mirrors, hanging plants, fans and other heavy objects. Stay under 'cover' till
the shaking stops.

 After tremors subside exit your home or school building and move to open fields.

 Do not push others.

What are the main causes of
NATURAL DISASTER?
o The main causes of natural disasters are tectonic shifts, lunar activities, deforestation, soil
erosion, air pressure, ocean currents, pollution, global warming, mining, seismic waves, etc.

o Agricultural practices, mining, deforestation, etc., can lead to landslides. Plants and animals can
also be damaged by wildfires.

o Climate change, the long-term warming of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, can also increase
the likelihood and severity of natural disasters. Higher temperatures can lead to more often
intense heat waves, droughts, and wildfires. Rising sea levels can cause more severe flooding,
particularly in coastal areas.
03
Advantages and
Disadvantages
What are the advantages of natural disaster?

The property value and living conditions in some areas will

improve through the redevelopment of infrastructure. Hurricanes
help to bring people together as they help each other in the
aftermath. They lower the average temperature for a certain
amount of time after the storm.
What are the disadvantages of natural disaster?

In a disaster, you face the danger of death or physical injury. You may also
lose your home, possessions, and community. Such stressors place you at risk
for emotional and physical health problems. Stress reactions after a disaster
look very much like the common reactions seen after any type of trauma.
Activity - REPORTING

 Group yourselves into five (5)
 Pick a topic from the presentation
 Choose a leader

02
 Create a power point presentation
 Assigned a selection part to everyone in the group
 Present in front of the class next meeting

Top 5 consequences of
climate change
01. Rising temperatures: as explained above, temperatures 03. Extreme weather events: sudden
are rising at a very fast rate, generating an increasingly changes in temperature alter the Earth's
warmer than normal climate meteorological cycles, generating
tsunamis, tornadoes, torrential rains...

02. Droughts: rising temperatures mean less and less

rainfall. Plants and crops need water to flourish

climate change
04. Floods: Although it may seem contradictory, rising temperatures can also produce torrential
rains. These rains wash away crops and cities, causing floods that result in irreparable damage

05. Migrations due to climate: the effects of climate change have forced many humans to move
around the globe to avoid high temperatures, torrential rains, droughts or the ravages of natural
disasters

Environmental education is
URGENT
Environmental education
is URGENT
To generate change, it is necessary to communicate and raise
awareness about environmental education

Planet Earth is the place where we live and, therefore, we are

not only actors, but also protagonists in its care and
conservation
I am committed to collaborating in the
care of the environment...
1. Paying attention to energy saving at home: turning off lights, taking
shorter showers, making conscious use of water consumption, unplugging or
turning off electrical appliances if they are not in use...
2. Reducing consumption: investing in the circular economy. Whether in
clothing, electronics, furniture, etc.
3. Using public transportation or electric vehicles
4. Consuming plant-based products
5. Raising my voice: raising awareness is vital for our future
