❖ UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF THE SITE – GENIUS LOCI

Genius loci is a Latin expression means “the spirit of place”.

Thus, Spirit of Place is defined as ;

The physical and spiritual elements that give meaning, value, emotion and mystery to place.

❑ SITE SELECTION

❖ HOW TO SELECT A SITE

Location is one of the most important factors when developing a sustainable site. It determines options to
access existing infrastructure, utilize public transportation, restore degraded ecosystems and employ
many other sustainable design practice.

The site selection guide has been identified by La Gro (2008) are:

1. Clarify the project purpose, goals and requirements

2. Determine the site selection criteria and factor such as access, utilities and size
3. Identify potential sites
4. Evaluate the suitability of each site. Weigh the environmental, economic and
social opportunities and constraints
5. Rank and prioritize the selected sites.
6. Select the most suitable site and develop a site selection report to document the
results of the evaluation. The report is useful when project teams need to revisit
decisions or select alternative properties.
7. Conduct feasibility studies to determine items such as market analysis, design
concepts and project costs.

❖ PROCEDURE ON A LOCATION APPRAISAL CHECKLIST

Site selection is the process of examining multiple options and assessing their relative
advantages and disadvantages. Site selection comes after the needs assessment is completed.
If the selection of site is done before the needs assessment, it might leads to compromise on
key design aspects due to the site limitations.

❖ GENERAL SITE SELECTION FORMAT
❑ SITE CONSIDERATION

The site consideration is to identify the areas best suited for developments.

❖ LOCATION AND CONTEXT BY UNDERSTANDING THE SITE AND ITS

SURROUDING

▪ Study the surrounding area and identify adjacent site conditions and current uses.
▪ Research existing comprehensive community plans and zoning codes that may influence
the site
▪ Determine the importance of the native flora and fauna of the site.
▪ Identify the potential for damage to the site from natural disasters.
▪ Identify existing and planned public transit, bicycle or pedestrian systems located within
0.25 miles of the site.

❖ TOPOGRAPHICAL FACTOR

▪ Gather topographic maps derived from sateliite imagery or physical surveys.

▪ Use aerial photos or site maps to locate existing water bodies.
▪ Identify the waterways or water flow of the site.
❑ SITE CONSIDERATION

The site consideration is to identify the areas best suited for developments.

❖ BUILDABLE QUALITY & AREA

▪ Identify the existing buildings interms of the design, materials used and their characteristic
of the place.
▪ Research the existing drainage infrasructure.

❖ SHAPE OF THE CITY

▪ Research the site’s history and prior uses.

▪ Determine the locations of existing public infrastructure such as roads and utility networks
▪ Identify project stakeholders.
▪ Identify and map the historical or cultural landscape features.
▪ Map characteristic site features that are unique or memorable such as rock outcroppings or
view corridors.
