Lymphoblast

 A large, round cell with round nucleus

filled with nucleoli

 Cytoplasm is basophilic and scanty

(sparse) or to some extent very scanty

LYMPHOBLAST (1)
LYMPHOCYTE REACTIVE/VARIANT LYMPHOCYTE

 A small, round cell with round nucleus  A large cell with round sometimes
without nucleoli irregular-shaped (monocytoid or many
 Cytoplasm is scanty to moderate in shape) nucleus with or without
amount and is slightly basophilic (color nucleoli
is described to have robin’s egg blue  Cytoplasm is abundant and royal-blue
appearance) in color
 The most mature cell in the lymphoid  Other shapes can be amoeboid
or lymphocytic series (cytoplasm of the cell scalloping the

 Size of the cell vary responsible for its  Otherwise known as atypical
variations lymphocyte or virocyte (a cell reactive
 Small lymphocyte (commonly to provoking viral infection)
encountered in blood smear), medium
lymphocyte and large lymphocyte
 In examinations, lymphocyte alone is a
correct answer
REACTIVE/VARIANT LYMPHOCYTE PLASMA CELL
 A large cell with round nucleus that is
eccentrically located
 Cytoplasm is abundant and is
basophilic with characteristic area of
hof or perinuclear halo (an unstained
portion extending from the nucleus)
 Cytoplasm is also filled with globules
(hole-like structures) named as russell
bodies (accumulated
immunoglobulins)
 Also otherwise known as PLASMACYTE
 A large lymphocyte
 Main function is antibody production
 The specific lymphocyte lineage is B-
lymphocyte
 When seen only in the bone marrow,
the condition associated is multiple
myeloma
 When seen in the blood smear, the
condition associated is plasma cell
leukemia
MONOCYTIC SERIES MONOCYTE (2)
MONOCYTE
 A large, round cell with monocytoid
(irregular or many shape) nucleus
 Nucleus morphology may vary from
round, semi-round to horse-shoe
shaped and brain-like convoluted
shaped
 Cytoplasm is abundant and is grayish-
blue in color filled with fine red
granules (ground-glass appearance –
turbid looking)
 Cytoplasm usually contain vacuoles
(remnants of phagocytosis)
 Also otherwise known as
MONONUCLEAR PHAGOCYTE
(mononuclear because it only has one
nucleus not segmented)
 The tissue equivalent of this cell is
MACROPHAGE
 The largest white blood cell in the
circulation
