Despite his youthful age, his deep concern for other people was already noticeable. As
a little boy, he spent many hours of his childhood on the shore of the lake, Laguna de
Bay, thinking of what was also taking place beyond. Almost everyday, in Calamba, he
witnessed the Guardia Civil lieutenant caning and injuring some inoffensive and
unarmed villagers whose only fault for instance was their failure to doff their hats, bow,
and humble themselves before that all powerful agent of the law. In his childhood
impressions, Rizal says. The officers whose duty it was to protect the people and keep
the public peace were the real outlaws.

When Rizal was ten years old, tragedy struck his family, At the time, an uncle of his, Don
Jose Alberto, returned from Europe. He found that during his absence, his wife had left
his home and abandoned their children to live with another man. Angered by her
infidelity, he planned to divorce her. To prevent a family scandal, Dona Teodora
persuaded her brother to forgive his erring wife. The family problem was settled
amicably , and Don Jose lived again with his wife. However, his unfaithful wife connived
with the lieutenant of the Guardia Civil to fabricate evidence that her husband
attempted to poison her, and Dona Teodora was accused of having aided her brother.
The lieutenant had an axe to grind against the Rizal family because Rizal’s father once
refused to give him fodder for his horse. Ordinarily, Dona Teodora should have been
imprisoned in the Calamba jail, but because of such a grudge, she was sent to the
provincial jail, making her walk on foot a distance of fifty kilometers. She suffered in
prison for two and a half years.

Hardly had the Rizal family recovered from the shock of the mother’s imprisonment
when another calamity occurred. The Cavite Mutiny flared up. In this connection, it
should be remembered that then there was a raging controversy over the question of
secularization. Zafra citied that to the Spanish Government, the question of Philippine
curacies was a matter of serious national concern involving the preservation of the
Spanish Political Integrity and sovereignty in the Philippines. The Spanish officials
accepted the view that the members of the Filipino clergy were active propagandist of
nationalistic ideas.

To discourage the Filipinos from attempting to fight and to dream of separating from
Spain, the government made life harder for the educated ones who were known for
their clamor for a more liberal administration of Spanish government in the Philippines.
Many were exiled; others were imprisoned while the more clever ones fled to other
countries, especially in Europe where they could continue working for reforms. Fathers
Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora were executed on the charge that they headed the
Cavite Mutiny.

Young though he was, Rizal grieved deeply over the unhappy condition of his country.
The Spanish cruelties awakened in his tender heart a strong determination to fight
tyranny. In fact, many years later, in one of his letters to Professor Blumentritt he said:

In view of these injustices and cruelties, although yet a child, my imagination was
awakened and I made a vow, dedicating myself someday to avenge the many
victims. With this idea in my mind, I studied and this is seen in all my writings. Someday,
God will give me the opportunity to fulfill my promises.
