How to Use this Resource
Practice writing and reading numbers to 20 with your students
using this Mind ful Math lesson and acti vities. Incl uded are a
choice of acti vities, pu zzles, posters, worksheets, and more. This
lesson and acti vities gi ve students the opportunity to practice
numbers to 20, as well as some practice with numbers to 100
,using mani pulati ves and di fferent methods to solve the problem
or model thei r answer for a whole week.
Mindful MATH – Number Sense
Lesson 2 : Read & Print Numbers
Opening Students complete Task Card #2 with a partner. Complete Journal Prompt #2
Activities on a chart, on mini whiteboards, or in notebooks. OPTIONAL: Pre-test.
Mental * As a whole class, count to 100 and beyond by 1’s without a visual guide. Talk
Math about the patterns you hear as you continue to count higher and higher.
* Practice Mental Math cards set #1 (numbers to 100). Show random numbers
and have students find them on the number line.
Whole *Teacher introduces lesson goal with “I Can…” poster #2
Group *Teacher writes the number words from zero to twenty on a chart mixed up.
Lesson As a class, read each word together. Students print the words and numerals.
*Students practice reading and putting number word cards (0-20) in the
correct order. Teacher calls on students to hold up number words as they are
called out.
*Challenge students to write number words beyond 20 and multiples of ten to
one hundred (10-100). For example, 35 is thirty-five with a dash in the middle.
Independent Students complete the printable practice pages provided (9 page options for
Practice lesson #2) by following the directions on top of each page.

Hands-On GAME #1: Play “Memory” alone or with a friend. Match number words to
Activities numeral cards. GAME #2.: With a partner, each turn over a number word card.
The larger number wins and the player gets both cards.
CENTER: Complete the 4-piece puzzles connecting a word and number
representations (base ten model, numeral, and ten frames).
Quick Meet and have students complete Quick Check #2 and/or a post-test
Checks assessment (I can read and print number words from zero to twenty.).
