Phrases and collocations

1. CONTROL

- in control (of sth): controlling sth or having the power to control sth

Ex: While letting go makes you feel you’re not in control, accepting something
brilliant without a battle can seem just to easy.

- take control (of sth): the ability to manage, direct or influence sth

Ex: The first thing you need to do to save your social life is to take control of your
anxiety.

- under control (of sb): being dealt with or limited successfully

Ex: It seems that the disease is now under control.

- out of control: if sth is out of control, it cannot be dealt with successfully

Ex: The fire is burning out of control.

2. DESCRIPTION

Give the description of sth/sb: provide detailed explanation of sth

Ex: I’m sure he could give a description of how he’s been damaged.

3. GRANTED

Take sth/sb for granted: to belive sth to be the true without even thinking about
it.

Ex: I took it for granted that I would find the perfect job.

4. PLACE

- take place: to happen

Ex: The concert takes place next Thursday.

Ex: You can use margarine in place of butter in some recipes.

5. VIEW

have/hold/take a view: have an opinion or perspective on a particular topic

Ex: I took a view on the issue of gun control and decided to support stricter
regulations.

1. DIFFERENCE

- make a difference (to sb/sth): to improve sth like a situation

Ex: Putting up some new wallpaper has made all the difference to the place.

Ex: The new version is supposed to be much better than the old one, but I can’t tell
the difference between them.

- there’s no/some/little/etc difference between: used to compare two things and


suggest that there’s no/some/little/etc difference between them.

Ex: As we mentioned above, there’s no difference between free versions and


games played with real money.

- influence sb/sth

- have/be an influence on sth/sb

Ex: The new policies introduced by the government will have an influence on the
way businesses are operated.

3. INTERNET

- on the Internet  explain where

Ex: I have seen funny tik tok videos on the Internet and I think you should see it,
too.

Ex: They send me these tickets over the Internet.

4. NEWS

- in the news: to be reported about

Ex: It’s one of several issues that have been in the news.

- on the news: broadcast, such as television or radio

Ex: I saw my favourite singer on the news last night.

- newflash (n): a short news report giving the most recent information about an
important or unexpected event.

Ex: We interrupt this programme to bring you a newsflash.

5. WATCH
- watch sb/sth

- watch (out) for sth/sb: to be careful to notice sb/sth

Ex: The cashiers were asked to watch out for forged banknotes.

- keep watch: : stay on the lookout for danger or trouble; to be on guard

Ex: He kept watch shile the other soldiers slept.
