I. Vocabulary:

 An applicant: A person who is asking for a job.


 To apply: To send your information to an employer to ask for a job.
 A candidate: A person who might get a job.
 A career: An occupation or profession that requires special training and
continues over a long period of time.
 To contrast: To talk about the ways two things are different.
 A cover letter: A formal letter to the employer to introduce the job seeker, show
qualifications, and ask for an interview.
 A motivation letter: A personal document detailing your professional skills and
reasons for applying for a course of study, a scholarship, or a volunteer work.
 A recommendation letter: A letter written on behalf of an applicant by someone
who can vouch for that person’s educational or professional performance.
 Duties and Responsibilities: Tasks that are done regularly in a job.
 An employee: A person who is hired and begins working.
 An employer: A person or organization making the decision to give the applicant
a job.
 To hire: To give someone a job and pay them for the work.
 To fire: To make someone leave a job against his/her will.
 An interview: A conversation where a candidate talks with an employer about a
job.
 Competencies: These are particular qualities that a company’s recruiters have
decided are desirable for employees to possess.
 A job application: A written request for employment.
 To network: To meet and talk with people who may help in the job search
process.

 A resume: A written document of work experiences, education, and skills.


 A skill: Something that you can do well.

 A job description: A useful, plain-language tool that explains the tasks, duties,
functions, and responsibilities of a position.
 Eligibility criteria: The minimum requirements that an applicant needs to possess
to apply for the job or get selected.
 Professional experiences: Experience that is relevant to a prospective role or
position.
 Educational background: The set of all the formal education that someone has
achieved.
 Bachelor’s Degree: A degree awarded by a college or university to a person who
has completed undergraduate studies.
 Master’s degree: An academic qualification granted at the postgraduate level.
 Ph.D. Degree: A degree awarded to people who have done advanced research

into a particular subject. Ph.D. is an abbreviation of “Doctor of Philosophy”.
