Nevertheless, CuI2 initially formed by the combination of Cu2+ with I- in aqueous
solution and decompose to form CuI by the influence of reducing agent Na2S2O3

Practical inorganic chemistry 4

Functions of Na2S2O3:

❖ Act as a reducing agent

❖ Prevent formation of I2, while excess amount of Na2S2O3 may result in the
formation of Cu-S2O3 complexes and excess of Iodide my dissolve the CuI complex
and form soluble CuI complex

Procedure:
1- weigh out (1 g) of copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate and dissolve it in (7 ml) of water.

2- A second solution is prepared by placing (1.33 g) of KI in a beaker and then dissolve by (5 ml)
of water with shaking carefully.

3- The second solution is added to the first solution with continuous

rapid stirring. Then (1g) of Na2S2O3.5H2O is added to the mixture
with continuous stirring.

4- the dense white solid is collected by filtration after 15 min, and then washed
with (5ml), portions of water, ethanol and finally with ether. Finally the product
is dried and weighed.

5- Keep the product and calculate the percentage yield of it.
