Last class ….ended with brief introduction to HV

• What is HV?
EE456 High Voltage Engineering Anything that can hazardous/fatal can be considered high voltage.
Note: 230/440 V is also dangerous and can become fatal if handled carelessly.
• Then what magnitude is considered “High Voltage” for this course EE456?
10 kV above which is used for transmitting power in Distributing sector or Transmitting
L2-Topic: Use/Applications of HV (i) Testing (ii) sector.
• Low/High are the generic terms which depend on the particular scenario. However, in case of
R & D (iii) Industrial applications. power transmission and distribution systems voltage can be classified into following classes:
Name Range
Low Voltage 50 – 1000 V
Course Instructor: Gururaj S Punekar Medium Voltage 1 kV – 100 kV
Dept of E & E NITK Surathkal. High Voltage 100 kV – 345 kV
EHV Voltage 345 kV – 765 kV
UHV Voltage > 765 kV

In the Field: Power Transmission

• Why HV in power systems for transmitting power?

Long distance power transmission and bulk power transmission necessitates high voltage system.
“Power transfer limit of a transmission line”.
maximum power transfer is limited by
(1) Thermal Limit, (2) Voltage Regulation and (3) Transmission angle (Stability).

Purpose for generating High Voltages
• TWO ASPECTS of R & D
1. HV & Insulation
• Three Reasons: 2. HV & Nuclear Physics ………Particle accelerators
• HV-Insulation research aims at:
1. Testing of electrical equipment. • Reduce cost
• Reduce size
2. Research and Developmental (R & D) activities. • Reliability & Long life
• HV Equipment cost is dictated by the insulation used.
3. Industrial applications. • Types of insulations:
