Pengunaan Should dan Can

1. SHOULD

Should’ berarti seharusnya atau semestinya.

You should do something = menjelaskan sesuatu yang baik untuk dilakukan, atau sesuatu
yang benar.
You should not do something = menjelaskan sesuatu yang tidak baik untuk dilakukan.
Kata ‘should’ terkadang mengandung makna yang sama dengan ‘must’ dan ‘have to‘. Namun
‘should‘ bersifat lebih lemah dari kedua kata – kata tersebut. Kata ini lebih personal dan tidak
mengandung makna memerintah ataupun memaksa.
You should apologize. ( kamu sebaiknya meminta maaf )
You must apologize. / You have to apologize. ( kamu harus meminta maaf )

Penggunaan ‘should’

 Memberi saran
You should speak to your teacher about it.
You look tired. You should take a rest.
She should see a doctor immediately.
“Should we invite Soni to the party?”
“Yes, I think we should.”

 Memberi opini rekomendasi

She should resign now.
We should do something about this terrible service.

 Pemikiran pribadi, biasanya diawali dengan kata ‘I think’ ( saya pikir / kira )
I think they should work so hard
I don’t think we should replace him.

 Menyatakan hal yang tidak benar atau tidak sesuai dengan yang diharapkan
I wonder where Boni is. He should be here by now.
The price on this packet is wrong. It should be Rp 50.000,- not Rp 60.000,-.
That girl on the motorcycle should be wearing a helmet.Menyatakan pengharapan
She’s been studying hard for the test, so she should pass. ( berharap agar dia lulus )

 Mengekspresikan sesuatu, misalnya untuk menguatkan pendapat

They are a good people. You should think so.

 Perasaan senang saat memperoleh sesuatu

What an amazing present. You really shouldn’t have.

 Menggambarkan sesuatu hal

You should have seen on his face when he found out that she had got the job.

 Kita dapat menggunakan ‘should’ setelah klausa ‘if’ untuk menyatakan sesuatu
yang kita yakini kecil kemungkinannya akan terjadi.
If there should be a problem, just give me a call and I will fix it.

Selain ‘should (do)‘ kita juga bisa menggunakan ‘should have (done)‘.

You should have done something = kamu tidak melakukannya, padahal hal tersebut adalah
baik untuk dilakukan.
You should not have done something = kamu melakukannya, padahal hal tersebut adalah
salah.
Contoh :
You missed a good class last night. You should have come.
I am getting fat. I should not have eaten so much.

Perbandingan ‘should do’ dan ‘should have done ‘

 You look tired. You should go to bed now
 You did not sleep last night. You should have gone to bed.

 Should setelah number of verbs

 Kita juga dapat menempatkan ‘should’ setelah ‘number of verbs’, khusunya :

demand, insist, propose, recommend, suggest.

Contoh:
He demanded that we should apologize.
They insisted that we should have lunch with him.
I suggest that you should buy a new purse.

 Bentuk lain adalah dengan menambahkan kata – kata : ‘it’s

important/vital/necessary/essential that … should …’.
Contoh:
It’s essential that everyone should come here on time.

Dalam hal ini kita juga dapat menghilangkan ‘should’.

It’s essential that everyone come here on time.
He demanded that we apologize.
I suggest that you buy a new purse.

Setelah kata ‘suggest’, kita tidak perlu menggunakan lagi kata ‘to’.
I suggest that you buy a new purse. ( bukan I suggest that you to buy a new purse)
Atau
What does he suggest we should do? / What does he suggest should do? (bukan What does
he suggest we to do?

Kita juga bisa menggunak akhiran ‘-ing‘ setelah suggest.

What does he suggest doing?
 Should setelah number of adjectives
Kita juga dapat menempatkan ‘should’ setelah ‘number of adjectives’, khususnya : strange,
odd, funny, typical, natural, interesting, surprised, surprising.

Contoh :

It’s strange that he should be fail. He is a smart boy.

I was surprised that she should do that.

*Memberikan penawaran (make offers)

Can I help you to solve your financial problems?

Kita biasanya menggunakan kalimat tanya jika kita ingin meminta seseorang melakukan
sesuatu.
Contoh:
