A HERO
R K Narayan

A boy called Swami became ‘A Hero’ overnight unknowingly

and accidently.

Read and understand the summary of the lesson.

‘A Hero’ is a story written by R.K. Narayan. Here Swami is a boy of eleven or

twelve years old. His Father read a newspaper report about the bravery of a village boy
who came face to face with the Tiger. Father asked Swami for his opinion. Swami said “I
think he must have been a very strong and grown – up person, not a boy at all”. According
to father courage is everything but Swami disputed that strength is required to face a tiger.

Swami used to sleep beside his grandmother but Swami’s Father wanted him to sleep
alone in the office room, so that he could become courageous. Swami thought it was a
frightful suggestion Swami tried to change the subject by talking about cricket club.
Swami wanted to put it off but by then the challenge had become a command.
Swami’s father thought that his wife and mother were too protective of Swami.

Swami went to bed without listening to a story and covered his face with the blanket.
Granny asked him if he was really sleepy. But the boy pleaded, “Shut up granny, don’t
talk to me and don’t let anyone call me even if the house is on fire”. He acted to be asleep.
His father made him get up and forced him to sleep in the office room. Then Swami said,
“Your office room is very dusty and there may be scorpions behind your law books”.
Swami’s father rejected his plea and told that if Swami did not sleep alone, he would
make him the laughing stock of his school.

Finally, he was made to sleep in the office room. As the night advanced, Swami was
frightened. He remembered all the stories of the devils and ghosts. He remembered how
his friend Mani had seen devil in the Banyan tree at his street end and Munisami’s father
spat blood after the devil slapped his cheek. He remembered how his old friend in the
fourth standard disappeared because he was carried off by a ghost to Siam or Nepal.
Through the silence of the night all kinds of noises reached his ears – the ticking of the
clock, rustle of trees, snoring sounds and some vague night insects humming.

Swami thought that the place under the bench was more compact and reassuring and
crouched there. He was racked with nightmares. He dreamt he was being chased by a
tiger. His feet stuck to the ground. He remembered he was alone in the room. He tried to
open his eyes but he could not. He groaned in despair. Later he sensed something moving.
He thought it was a devil, but when he caught it, that turned out to be a Burglar.

“Aiyo! Something has bitten me” cried the burglar. In a moment father, cook, and
the servant came in carrying light.
Congratulations were showered on Swami the next day. His classmates looked at
him with respect, and his teacher patted his back. The headmaster said that he was a true
scout.
The inspector said, “Why don’t you join the police when you are grown up?”. But
Swami had made up his mind to be an engine driver, a railway guard or a bus conductor
late in life.
The following night Swami went to bed early and slept beside his Granny. His father
thought of making him sleep alone but Swami’s mother did not allow him. So he was
angry and went away.
Swami heard the conversation sleeping under the blanket. He felt relieved to hear
that his father was giving him up.

Summary @ a glance

Swami’s father read a newspaper report about the bravery of a village boy who came
face to face with the Tiger.

Swami argued that strength is more important than courage to face a tiger.

Swami’s father challenged him to show courage by sleeping alone in the office room.

Swami tried to escape from the challenge because he had always slept beside his
granny and any change kept him trembling and awake all the night.
When father forced him to sleep alone, Swami looked at his granny and mother for help
but in vain(useless)

As night advanced, Swami heard different noises and suffered with the nightmares.

Later he saw a moving creature and thought that it was a devil. As it came nearer, he
hugged it tightly and bit it hard

Swami helped to catch a notorious burglar of the district. Congratulations were showered
on him and he became “A Hero” overnight

Swami was congratulated. His classmates looked at him with respect. His class teacher
patted on his back. The Headmaster told that he was a true scout. The police inspector
asked him to join the police force.

Swami actually wanted to become a railway guard, or an engine driver or a bus

conductor.

There's a girl by the tracks. -Deven Kanal

An unemployed young man risked his own life to save the life of an unknown girl who
was thrown out of a train and bleeding alone by the side of tracks

Characters

Baleshwar : unemployed youngster from Mirzapur, UP

Roma : A call centre executive from Pune, Maharashtra
Dinesh : Roma’s brother
Truck driver: a Gujarati who helped Baleshwar to carry the to a
hospital

" Love and compassion are the true religion to me. But to develop
this, we do not need to believe in any religion", says the Dalai Lama.

Let's read the lesson " There's a girl by the tracks" to find the humanity
of a young man who, even, risked his life to save a girl.

Most of the railway stations of metropolitan cities in and around India are
always overcrowded with commuters who travel to their work place daily.
Roma Talreja a 21-year call- centre executive try to settle herself in the ladies
compartment near the door. While the train was moving fast, she got pushed
and lost her balance and thrown out of the coach. At the same time Baleshwar
Mishra, an unemployed High school dropout, who was travelling in another
train speeding in the opposite direction saw this. Immediately he grabbed
trains red emergency chain without any thinking. " Let's go and help her", he
shouted but nobody moved to help . Baleshwar jumped off the still moving
train and ran back very fast to help the girl.

After running for several minutes, he found the girl and asked,
"Behanji aap theek hai?” (Sister are you okay?). But there was no response.
He saw the blood flowing out of the deep cut behind the young woman's
head. He lifted the girl and crossed through some shrubbery and followed the
direction of the vehicle sounds until he found the road. " My sister is injured",
he requested the motorists but no one stopped.

Just when Baleshwar had begun to you lose hope, a tempo truck
driver, a middle aged man who spoke Gujarati, helped him to take the girl to
hospital. On the way, a traffic police man said, "Take the girl to Airoli " . But
Baleshwar disagreed because Airoli was at least 10 kilometres away. " There
is a closer place I know of" , he said. After 10 minutes they reached a small
hospital. But lack of staff and equipment, the on- duty doctor give only the
basic first aid. He advised them to move nearby hospital. On the way, when
Roma got conscious, Baleshwar asked her name and whom he could call to
give the message. She gave her brother Dinesh’s phone number and became
unconscious. Baleshwar memorized the phone number and the tempo truck
driver gave his mobile to call Dinesh. Dinesh who was closing his day at his
marketing job rushed towards his motorcycle to reach the place quickly.

They are arrived to Divine Multi - specialty Hospital and Research Centre.
Seeing the extent of Roma's injury, Dr Anil Agarwal admitted her
immediately to the ICU without any paperwork. Roma was out of danger.
Doctor said that if nobody had helped her she could have bled to death.
Roma’s brother told that her cell phone and handbag were missing. So
Baleshwar revisited the spot where Roma had fallen. A railway employee
told that some of Roma's belongings had been found. In a few days Roma
made a full recovery. She said that she could never repay Baleshwar who
risked his life. According to Baleshwar the people of Mumbai are afraid and
they fear getting trapped in the courts or with the police. An unemployed
youngster's courage tells us that love and compassion are true religions in the
world.

GENTLEMAN OF RIO EN MEDIO

Juan A A Sedillo

The passion for his forefathers’ land and concern towards the of his village
made an old man a real ‘gentleman’ of Rio en Medio.

Characters:
• Don Anselmo – an old man of Rio en medio and a man of principles
• The Americans – the buyers of the land
•Summary:
The story teller – the narrator and the legal adviser
• Children -- relatives / decedents of Don Anselmo

“Gentleman of Rio en Medio” is a short story by Juan A A Sedillo. In

this story, the hero of the lesson Don Anselmo promised to buy a land from
the Americans.

Don Anselmo lived in Rio en Medio. It is in New Mexico, United States. He

tilled his ancestral land. His house was small and wretched. The little creek
ran through his land. His orchard was gnarled and beautiful.

His appearance: His coat was old, green and faded. He was wearing Prince
Alberts (long, double breasted coat). His gloves were old and torn and his
fingertips showed through them. He carried a cane which was only the
skeleton of worn-out umbrella.

His manners were quite unusual. A dark young boy always

followed him. Though he was an old man, he bowed to all and removed his
hat and gloves carefully. The manner of removing is also similar to that of
Charlie Chaplin.

The lesson is about a negotiation between Don Anselmo and the Americans.
Don Anselmo inherited property from his ancestors. Now he wanted to sell
this land. The Americans wanted to buy this land. The day of sale he comes
into the office. There was a great deal of conversation about rain and his
family. The story teller said, “These Americans are buena gente they are good
people”. They make a discovery that Don Anselmo owns almost twice as
much as he thinks. So they call him to their office and offer twice the money
for the extra land. Don said, “I don’t like to have spoken to me in that
manner”. But Don takes it as an insult and rejected the offer. After purchasing
the land for twelve hundred dollars, the Americans moved into Rio en Medio,
replastered the old house, pruned the trees and patched the fence.

One day they came to the office to complain that the children of the village
overrun their property, play under the trees and pluck blossoms. So another
meeting was arranged with the old man. They requested him to stop children
from playing in their orchard. But Anselmo told them that he planted a tree
after the birth of each child in the village. He said “I did not sell the trees
because I could not. They are not mine”. So the trees in the orchard belong
to the children and he sold only his land and not trees. The children are the
real owners of those trees.

The Americans became helpless. Anselmo was a man of principles. He had

refused extra money for the land. So they bought each tree from the
descendants of Don Anselmo

THE CONCERT
Shanthala

The power of music played by Pandit Ravishankar brought a great and beautiful

2. Smitha - Anant’s Sister
3. Father, Mother
4. Susheela - Anant’s Aunt
5. Pandith Ravi Shankar - Sitar maestro
6. Ustad Allah Rakha - Tabla Player

Dear Students,

“Music is God’s gift to man, the only art of heaven given to earth, the
only art of earth we take to heaven”. Walter Savage Landor

In this Lesson you would be able to know the power of music and how
a cancer affected boy fulfilled his last wish.

One morning, Smitha, a girl of sixteen years, living in a small

apartment in Bombay, read the newspapers and said loudly with excitement
about Pandith Ravishankar playing sitar at Shanmukhananda Auditorium the
next day.
Her mother cautioned her not to wake up her brother Ananth as he
needed all sleep and rest, because he was suffering from last stage of cancer.
But the boy was not asleep. He expressed his great eagerness to see and listen
to Pandith Ravishankar’s music as he was his great fan. So, he said “We
mustn’t miss the chance.”

His mother gave all care he needed and visited several hospitals with
high hopes and uttered prayers endlessly. The Boy repeated his wish to hear
and see the maestro saying “It’s a chance of life time.”

Smitha bit her lip in self-reproach. She had known the frightening truth
that Ananth was going to die. She pretended that all would be well and they
would return together to Gaganpur. Anant the 15-year-old boy was very
talented. He was the best table tennis player in his school, and the fastest
runner, good at playing sitar, and was already able to compose his own tunes.

Ananth’s family went to Bombay with high hopes in the miracle of

modern science and stayed at aunt Susheela’s apartment. But his condition
worsened day by day and the doctors asked his parents to take him home and
to fulfil his last wish. But the boy repeated the same wish. Tears rolled down
from the eyes of Smitha who was standing at the window looking at the
traffic. Her aunt suggested her to go to the park. She felt loneliness there.
Suddenly a thought came to her mind and she decided to meet Pandit
Ravishankar and to request to come home. Thus, her father brought two
tickets. The next day, Smitha and her father went to the concert and enjoyed
it very much. She felt as if the gates of enchantment and wonder were
opening. She heard Ananth’s voice in every beat of tabla. The Audience gave
a huge standing applause. A mustachioed man made a long boring speech.

After the concert, Smitha wriggled between the crowds and requested
Pandith Ravishankar to play for her brother at home. Pandith Ravishankar
and Usthad Allah Rakha. agreed to play for her brother.

Jazz Poem Two

The old Jazz musician was like Ancient Mariner in S T.
Coleridge’s poem. He felt that had a message for the people of the world. He
was a pathetic figure who was silent in speech but eloquent in music. He
could express himself through music. The old musician was black and had
an old, wrinkled face. He did not have proper clothes to wear. His shoes were
also torn and he had put paper in them in order to make himself comfortable.
He wore an old alto saxophone which was hanging from his neck by a wire
coat hanger. He wanted to tell the whole world that he was sent into this
world to preach the Black Gospel of Jazz and he was preaching it with words.
The moment he started preaching, he transformed into a Bird which flies
high, high, higher until it flies away. Otherwise he would come back to find
himself a Black Man again.
