Assignment 8.2.1

When writing a research paper, it is important to choose a focused topic that is interesting
and relevant to the subject area. The introduction should lead the reader from a general
subject area to a particular topic of inquiry, establishing the scope, context, and significance
of the research being conducted. The introduction should summarize the current
understanding and background information about the topic, state the purpose of the work
in the form of the research problem supported by a hypothesis or a set of questions, explain
briefly the methodological approach used to examine the research problem, highlight the
potential outcomes the study can reveal, and outline the remaining structure and
organization of the paper

. To choose a good topic for a research paper, one should brainstorm concepts, do
background research, develop a research question, and start doing some exploratory, in-
depth research. As you do more in-depth research, you can modify or refine your topic
based on what you find

. A well-organized paragraph supports or develops a single controlling idea, which is

expressed in a sentence called the topic sentence. A topic sentence has several important
functions: it substantiates or supports an essay’s thesis statement; it unifies the content of a
paragraph and directs the order of the sentences; and it advises the reader of the subject to
be discussed and how the paragraph will discuss it
