Died in February 1999 .
OVERVIEW OF THEORY
“Behavioral System Model, was first proposed in
1968.
It a nursing care model that advocates the fostering of
efficient & effective behavioral functioning in the patient
to prevent illness and stresses.
Johnson’s proposed 7 Subsystems.
An imbalance in any of the behavioral subsystems
results in disequilibrium .
Goals of nursing is to assist the client maintain or
restore behavior system balance. equilibrium.

4
JOHNSON’S 7 SUBSYSTEMS
The DRIVE OR GOAL : Motivation or reasons
for the behaviors of the subsystem
THE SET : Ordinary or normal behaviors that the
patient prefers to use to meet the goal of a
subsystem.
THE CHOICE : Options that are available to the
patient to meet subsystem goals.
 ACTION OR BEHAVIOR : Consequence of
the previous three structural component.
ASSUMPTIONS
 Behavior is the sum of physical, biologic, & social
factors.

A person is a system of behavior characterized by

repetitive & goal directed behaviors that always strive
toward balance.

Person expend large amounts of energy to maintain

behavioral system balance in response to imbalance
caused by persistent excessive forces.
THEORY DEVELOPMENT & INFLUENCES
Johnson’s work was inspired by:
Florence Nightingale, Faculty, & Colleagues.

Stems from:
 Philosophical ideas
 Research
Theories of development
 Her clinical experiences as pediatric nurse (Johnson,
1978).
METAPARADIGMS
Person: A bio psychosocial being who is
behavioral system with 7 subsystems.
Environment: The totality of the internal
& external force -(internal & external
environment )

Health: “Some Degree Constancy in

Behavior or to maintain some balance or
equilibrium.

Nursing: An external regulatory force that

acts to restore balance to the behavioral system.
STRENGTHS
Effective framework for evaluation patient’s
outcome.

Can be used in inpatient, , community settings &

nursing administration.

Allows nurses to categories observations & gain

insight in clinical situations.

It helps patients to achieve optimum level of

functioning.
WEAKNESSES
The model does not enable nurses to identify
interventions.

It is very individual oriented so the family is only

considered as an environment.

Focus on the person rather than disease.

APPLICATION INTO NURSING PRACTICE

The model allows nurses to provide not only physical

but also psychological support to patients by inhibiting
inadequate behavior.

This model evaluates the impact of an intervention by

focusing on situational imbalances in a person’s
behavior and their correction.
EXAMPLE

A 67 year old man is admitted to the hospital with

CVA, he has been marriage & father of two adult
children who lives in same city ,he came with right
side weakness ,expressive aphasia ,slurred speech &
other problems.
ASSESMENT

 Attachment-Family & Friends.

 Dependency-On physically, financially.
 Ingestive- Decrease appetite & difficulty
swallowing.
 Elimination- Walk to bathroom.
 Aggressive & Protective: Worry of travel family
& wife.
 Achievement: relearn to walk ,talk &ADLS)
DIAGNOSIS

Insufficient development of the affiliative

subsystem

 Insufficient development of dependency

subsystem
PLANNING & NURSING
INTERVENTIONS: EVALUATION

 External regulatory
forces that should protect Balance
stimulated & nurture the
behavior system. &
 Explanation and teaching Equilibrium.
the patient family &
friends.
