Introduction

Double crank, double rocker, crank rocker all of them are special cases of four bar mechanism.
The Grashof’s law is used to ensure the input link (Crank) will make a complete revolution and
therefore:

s+l ≤ p+ q
S: the shortest link.

L: the largest link.

P & q: the other remaining link.

The dimensions of four selected links:

s=100 mm ,l=240 mm , p=170 mm , q=160 mm

100+240 ≤ 170+180
340 ≤ 350
The thickness of all links t= 10 mm.

The joint diameter for all links d= 25mm.

The width of all links w=2d = 50 mm.

b. The solidworks sketching steps

1. Select the front plant to draw the largest link L, sketch and create a straight slot.

2. Draw two circles as a joint member and select them to make equal relationship
3. Select smart dimension and defined all required dimensions’ link.
4. Exit sketch, go to extrude future and make 10 mm link thickness.

5. Finally, save the part and don’t close Solidworks software.

6. Create the link P by editing sketch of link L (the edit will be just on length of link)

7. Exit sketch and select (save as) the Link P.

8. In same procedure, create the Link S by edit the length of Link P.

9. Exit sketch and select (save as) the Link s.

10. In same way, create the Link Q by edit the length of Link S.
11. Exit sketch and select (save as) the Link Q.

12. Make a new assembly and select browse to insert the four links by order.

13. Select the hole drilling joint for link (Q&L) and select mate concentric relation.
14. Select the face of each of link Q and link L to make coincident relation.

15. Do the same mate relation procedure for link S and link P to get the four bar mechanism
16. Go to the motion study, select rotary motor constant speed 20 rpm on the shortest link
at (O2) joint and make sure the largest link L is not floating like others in order to get the
crank rocker mechanism.
17. Run the animation for ten seconds and select motion analysis instead of animation to
create motion path, select the follower joint, displacement trace path for each of
follower and crank.
18. Open a new assembly and insert same four links

19. Select mate to make relations between links but here the adjacent of shortest link is the
fixed link to get double rocker mechanism.
20. Go to motion study and select rotary motor on (O2 or O4) joint, at constant speed, 20
rpm then run the study for 10 seconds.
21. Select motion analysis for another two joints to determine the motion path

22. Open a new assembly and insert all four links to make finally the double crank
mechanism
23. Select mate and make (concentric & coincident) relations, make sure to fix the shortest
link.
24. Go to motion study and select rotary motor on (O2 or O4) joint, at constant speed, 20
rpm then run the study for 10 seconds.
1. Select the motion analysis for another two joints to determine the motion path
Conclusion

The four bar mechanism has many of uncountable applications, however the double rocker and
double crank based on my conclusions both lead to oscillating. In addition, the vibrations began
to appear at high frequencies where the oscillations occurring at low frequencies. The crank
rocker gives zero oscillations, complete rotation for each of crank and follower. The input link of
crank rocker is the smallest link and the fixed supporting link is the largest link and this making a
smoothly path motion without links interference problem.
