WHO IS
DR. ALBERT ELLIS ?
Dr. Albert Ellis was a renowned
psychotherapist known for his
outspokenness and desensitization to
speaking.
He was born on September 27, 1913
Ellis died in 2007 from a long illness.
Ellis developed Rational Psychotherapy in
1956, a direct, active approach to
psychotherapy.
The Rational Emotive Behavior Theory (REBT) highlight the role of cognitions on
emotions with the assertion that people can be best appreciated in terms of
internal cognitive dialogue or self-talk. REBT views that emotional disorders are
associated with cognitive processes that are not rational. The main goal of
REBT is to reform the self-defeating cognition of the client and assist him/her in
obtaining a more reasonable viewpoint in life. The type of therapy is didactic
and provoking. It educates the clients to argue illogical thinking and if essential,
challenge the client's self-defeating idea or principle (Gladding 2000).
REBT focuses attention on the present and helps a person develop a new

way of thinking about events to prevent maladaptive behaviors and

negative emotions. The approach may help a person achieve their goals

and learn how to overcome adversity by addressing the underlying beliefs

and thoughts that can lead to self-defeating or self-sabotaging actions.

The REBT techniques that Ellis identified comprise
cognitive, emotive, and behavioral.
(Tylus 2003).
It focuses on helping clients conquer “defeating
cognitions.’ The method involves reforming ideas
that are unreasonable and irrational. Other
techniques include reframing from an
unconstructive stance to a more positive viewpoint.

COGNITIVE This approach also emphasizes challenging

negative self-talk and replacing it with more
empowering and realistic thoughts. Additionally, the
method encourages clients to identify and
challenge any underlying beliefs or assumptions
that contribute to their defeating cognitions,
promoting a more balanced and constructive
mindset.
EMOTIVE TECHNIQUES
Focuses on the client’s “affective or emotional domain.” This
helps clients learn to acknowledge themselves. By addressing
the client's affective or emotional domain, therapists can assist
them in developing a deeper understanding and acceptance
of their own emotions. This process allows clients to cultivate
self-compassion and develop healthier coping mechanisms
for managing their emotions effectively.
Behavioral techniques improve mood and
functioning by developing balanced
behaviors, encouraging responsibility, and
engaging in enjoyable activities. REBT, or
exposure therapy, involves confronting
fears and coping with them, fostering
BEHAVIORAL confidence and new thinking, ultimately
TECHNIQUES empowering individuals to take control of
their lives.

Focuses on the full array of behavioral

methods such as assertiveness training,
relaxation therapy, self-management, self-
monitoring, and homework assignments
