The Canary

Recommended Visual Aid: A toy canary or yellow bird and a bird cage.

When Luda was twelve, she got a present. A canary! She was so happy! She spent the whole
day near the cage with the canary listening to him singing. Luda named the bird Dick.

Luda thought it was a pity to keep the canary in a cage all the time so sometimes she let him fly.
But one day the bird flew out the window and never returned to his cage. This made Luda very
sad. Luda kept looking for Dick. She looked everywhere, but in vain. Dick was not to be found.

One morning a neighbor who knew about the disappearance, called Luda and said that she
thought she might know where Dick was. She led Luda to the well. They came to the lip of the
well and looked in. Inside the well was dark and cool.

“Listen!” the neighbor said. Luda listened and heard a weak "tweet-tweet!"

“It's Dick! He is here! We must rescue him!” Luda cried and ran to find her dad.

“Dad, Dick is in the well! Will you help me get him?”

“I think this might be impossible.” Luda dad said, “I don't have a ladder long enough to reach
Dick.”

“But you can't leave Dick in the well! Daddy, let me go down in a bucket and I can get him! Luda
cried.”

“You can't, my dear! It is too dangerous,” her father said.

“But we have to try!” Luda insisted. “It is the right thing to try and save Dick.”

She continued to try and persuade her dad. Finally her father went with her to the well.

“Are you sure that you can do it?” asked her father.

“Yes, yes! I can do it. Do you hear? Dick is calling me!”

Luda got into the bucket. Her dad tied the rope tightly around his daughter and to the bucket so
she should not slipped out of the bucket and then he gently lowered the bucket with the girl
into the well.

“Dick! Dick! called Luda. Finally she saw the bird clutching the side of the well. She reached out
and grabbed the bird.
“I got Dick, daddy! Lift me!”

Carefully, with trembling hands, dad pulled them into the sunlight. How he admired his brave
girl! He hugged and kissed her.

“Were you afraid? the father asked.

“Of course not, Daddy! I knew you were holding the rope.

“It's great that you trusted me. I want you to trust our Heavenly Father just as you trusted me.

God always keeps us firmly in His hands, so we can trust Him whatever happens in our lives. He
will never let us down.

Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for loving me and the little birds. Help me to trust you with all my
heart and to remember that I can always depend on you for help. Amen.
