CERTIFICATION
Once the course has been completed, all attendees will receive a
certificate. We will issue a certificate only to those who attended 80%
of the course. Certificates will be issued a week after course
completion, and will be signed by South Arm and the ORE GEOLOGY
Conference and the presenter Dr. Thierry Sempere.

METHODOLOGY
The teaching activity is developed through interactive theorical
sessions and practical exercises. The teaching will be conducted
online. If participants wish, they will be able to provide their own
datings at the end of the course, so that the methods taught can be
applied to them and in particular to construct time / temperature
diagrams.

COURSE FRAMEWORK
INTRODUCTION
Contrary to classic belief, the vast majority of geochronological data
does not indicate "the age of the rock", but rather dates when the rock
cooled below certain temperatures (called "closing temperatures").
Although this fact seems to complicate the management of
geochronological data, it actually provides very useful tools, especially
in mining exploration and exploitation.

ITINERARY
Module 1. PROBLEM
Geochronological data does not indicate "the age of the rock“ as is
usually believed, rather it indicates when the rock cooled.

Module 2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this course is to clarify what types of information are
provided by the geochronological ages that are obtained, and to
teach how they can be better used in the mining industry.

Module 3. FUNDAMENTALS
The course explains the physical, geochemical, mineralogical, and
magmatic factors that determine the obtaining and meaning of
geochronological ages. These aspects are used to briefly recall the
basic geochemical and mineralogical principles that allow better
investigation of magmatic geology and its mining applications.

Module 4. METHODS
The course explains what geochronological systems are available in
geology (for times before the Quaternary) and on what minerals they
can be used. It is shown that the only common method that provides
“the age of the rock” in the plutonic field is the U-Pb system on zircon.
Plutonic, volcanic, and detrital rock cases are distinguished, and
guidelines are provided for an optimal interpretation of each case.

Module 5. DIVERSIFIED DATA PROCESSING

Time-temperature (t-T) diagrams are constructed using diversified
geochronological data. The course explains how they are interpreted
and the interest they present.

Module 6. MINING APPLICATIONS

The use of time-temperature t-T diagrams has important implications
for mineral exploration, particularly for the selection of targets on a
regional or local scale. It can also be applied to previously discovered
deposits to improve their evaluation, and to estimate the possibilities
of nearby exotic secondary deposits.

Module 7. APPLICATIONS TO THE GEOLOGY OF PERU AND THE

ANDES
Much of the second session of the course will conclude with the
presentation of geochronological results obtained during the last
decade, which require rethinking a certain number of previous
interpretations.

Module 8. PRACTICAL EXERCISES

Participants will be able to provide their own datings to practice.
