STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY FOR
EXPLORATION AND MINING
COURSE FRAMEWORK
INTRODUCTION
This structure course uses the mineral systems approach (MSA) to
understanding “where” minerals are deposited verses the “how”.
The “where” can occur at various scales from the craton and district
scale to the prospect or deposit scale, even down to the
fracture/vein scale. The key to predicting where minerals are
deposited, or where “sweet spots” may lie, is highly dependent on
structure. Therefore, having a basic understanding of kinematic
variations in structural styles and fracture mechanics is vital to
mineral exploration and development.
