poster girl of the Tukde Tukde
gang Shehla Rashid Shora
has been selected as Assis-
tant Professor by the Jammu
and Kashmir Public Service
Commission in the Sociology
subject.
After withdrawing her pe-
tition in the Supreme Court
challenging the abrogation
of Article 370, Shehla Rashid
has been praising Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi.
Shehla Rashid along with
IAS officer Shah Faesal float-

Within days after Parlia-
ment amended some provi-
sions of Article 370 and com-
pletely scrapped Article 35-A,
the then Shah Faesal and ac-
tivist Shehla Rashid had chal-
lenged the Centre’s move in
the Supreme Court.
A group of seven per-
sons including Shah Faesal
and Shehla Rashid had ap-
proached the top court chal-
lenging the presidential or-
der revoking special status
accorded to Jammu and Kash-
mir, and also the J&K Reorga-
nization Act.
Recently Shehla Rashid
praised Prime Minister Na-
rendra Modi, Union Home
Minister Amit Shah, the In-
dian Army, and the Jammu
and Kashmir Lieutenant Gov-
ernor Manoj Sinha, for ensur-
ing “long-term peace and se-
curity” in the Valley. Once
a vocal critic of PM Modi,
Rashid made the statement
amid an ongoing war between
Israel and the Hamas terror-
ist group, which has so far
killed 3,200 people on both
sides and triggered a massive
displacement of citizens.
Taking to X (formerly Twit-
ter), Rashid said that the cur-
rent situation in the Middle
East has made her realise
“how lucky we are as Indi-
ans”. “The Indian Army and
security forces have sacri-
ficed their everything for our
safety. Credit where it’s due...
for bringing peace to Kash-
mir,” she wrote on the micro-
blogging site.

of a policeman in Baramulla
and vowed to bring the killers
and their supporters to justice,

institution of Departmental Vigi-
lance officers is a step towards uti-
lizing officers in field within the con-
cerned department to provide a help-
ing hand to curb corrupt practices.
They added that Vigilance is to be
recognized as a management func-
tion in every sector of governance
and we have to build structure, pro-
cess and systems in such a manner
so as to prevent leakage which ad-
versely affect productivity and prof-
itability.
During the workshop, the partici-
pants were also enlightened about
the detailed procedure regarding
conducting of Regular Departmen-

IABETES Type 2 : Diabetes is a grow-
ing health problem in Idia with mil-
lions of people living with this meta-
bolic health condition. When we say
diabetes, limiting sugar intake is what we make
our first association with. However, according
to a recent study, it is not just sugar that can put
you at risk of diabetes type 2, but another every-
day ingredient as well.
Tulane University in New Orleans conduct-
ed a study that concluded how salt or increased
sodium intake may also lead to development of
Diabetes type 2. According to a report by the
Conversation, The Tulane study can only sug-
gest an association between salt use and the
risk of developing type 2 diabetes – nothing
more.
WHAT DOES THE STUDY SAY?
A comprehensive survey of more than
4,00,000 adults registered in the UK Biobank
over a period of 11.8 years showed that people
who ‘sometimes’, ‘usually’ or ‘always’ added
salt to their meals had an associated 13%, 20%
and 39% higher likelihood of developing type
2 diabetes, as opposed to those who ‘never’ or
‘rarely’ used salt.
HOW SALT AFFECTS DIABETES?
The American Diabetes Association recom-
mends that people with diabetes limit their so-
dium intake to 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day.
1. Hypertension: As salt consumption in-
creases, so does the risk of hypertension. Giv-

already existing condition, making manage-

2. Heart Strain: With increased sodium lev-
els, there’s a higher blood volume circulat-

trol: While salt doesn’t directly affect glucose
levels, high-salt diets are frequently calorie-
rich and can contribute to weight gain, thereby
indirectly influencing blood sugar regulation.
To avoid and manage type 2 diabetes, diet
is crucial. Whole foods including fruits, vege-
tables, whole grains, lean meats, and healthy
fats should be the focus of a nutritious and bal-
anced eating plan.
Alzheimer’s disease: Study
metabolic rise in an area of
the brain called the hippo-
campus is an early stage in
the development of Alzheim-
er’s disease, according to Karolinska
Institutet researchers in a study pub-
lished in Molecular Psychiatry. The
revelation opens the door to new po-
tential early intervention strategies.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most
common form of dementia and strikes
about 20,000 people in Sweden every
year. Researchers now show that a
metabolic increase in the mitochon-
dria, the cellular power plants, is an
early indicator of the disease.
The teams behind the study used
mice that developed Alzheimer’s dis-
ease pathology in a similar way to hu-
mans. The increase in metabolism in
young mice was followed by synaptic
changes caused by disruption to the
cellular recycling system (a process
known as autophagy), a finding that
was awarded the Nobel Prize in Phys-
iology or Medicine in 2016.
After a time, metabolism in the
Alzheimer brain usually declines,
which contributes to the degrada-
tion of synapses. This the research-
ers could also see in the older mice,
which had had the disease for longer
time. “The disease starts to develop 20
years before the onset of symptoms,
so it’s important to detect it early --
especially given the retardant medi-
cines that are starting to arrive,” says
Per Nilsson, associate professor at the
Department of Neurobiology, Care
Sciences and Society, Karolinska In-
stitutet. “Metabolic changes can be a
diagnostic factor in this.”
Maria Ankarcrona, professor at the
same department continues:
“Interestingly, changes in metab-
olism can be seen before any of the
characteristic insoluble plaques have
accumulated in the brain. The differ-
ent energy balance tallies with what
we’ve seen in images of the Alzheim-
er brain, but we’ve now detected these
changes at an earlier stage.”
The study was conducted in close
partnership between both research-
ers’ groups, who analysed the part of
the mouse brain called the hippocam-
pus, a structure that plays an impor-
tant part in short-term memory and
that is affected early in the patholog-
ical process. Applying the technique
of RNA sequencing to see which genes
are active in the cells of the hippo-
campus during different stages of the
disease, the researchers discovered
that one of the early stages of the dis-
ease is an increase in mitochondrial
metabolism. The researchers stud-
ied the changes that then appeared
in the synapses between the brain’s
neurons using electron microsco-
py and other techniques, and found
that vesicles called autophagosomes,
whereby spent proteins are broken
down and their components metabo-
lised, had accumulated in the synaps-
es, disrupting access to functioning
proteins. The researchers will now be
studying the role of mitochondria and
autophagy in the development of Al-
zheimer’s disease in more detail -- for
example, in mice whose disease pro-
vides an even better model of the Al-
zheimer brain.
“These findings highlight the im-
portance of retaining functional mi-
tochondria and normal protein me-
tabolism,” says Dr Nilsson.

• Sit comfortably cross-legged or

a yoga mat.
• Ensure that your back and head
are in a straight line and erect. Re-
lax your whole body.
• Close your eyes.
• Focus on your normal, natural
flow of breath for a few rounds of
inhalation-exhalation so as to in-

• Do not forcefully pull your
stomach in. It must be an automat-
ic, involuntary movement.
• The next exhalation must fol-

er an HtpG inhibitor to a drug
that enhances sensitivity to
light.
The researchers found that
the HtpG inhibitor, armed
with the photosensitive drug,
was rapidly absorbed into the
cells of the Lyme bacteria.
When hit with light, the bac-
teria’s cells went into disar-
ray and ultimately collapsed,
killing them.
“Our findings point to a
new, alternate antibiotic de-
velopment strategy, whereby
one can exploit a potential-
ly vast number of previously
unexplored druggable areas
within bacteria to deliver cel-
lular toxins,” Haystead said.

The books featured were

present from 450 in 2016.
These startups are eligible
for certain fiscal and non-fis-

tary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta today
holds an interactive session with

Social activists here in the morn-
ing at Banquet Hall, Srinagar and
later in the afternoon at Conven-
tion Center, Jammu as part of the
ongoing Vigilance Awareness
Week.
Besides Commissioner Secre-
tary, GAD senior civil and police
functionaries from Divisional &
District Administrations were
present at both the venues. These
included Divisional Commis-
sioner Kashmir/Jammu; Deputy
Commissioner, Srinagar/
Jammu; SSP Srinagar/Jammu;
Commissioner JMC/SMC; sev-
eral HoDs and other Sectoral Of-
ficers of the concerned districts.
The RTI Activists from differ-
ent parts of the Kashmir and
Bloc following Omar Abdullah's remark

ous suggestions for further en-
hancing transparency, account-
ability and speedy delivery of
public services in a corruption
free environment.
On the occasion, the Chief Secre-
tary stressed on the RTI activists
to extend their constructive sup-
port to the administration in weed-
ing out undesirable elements
which misuse processes for pri-
vate benefits. He asked them to
channelise their energies to ensure
percolation of due benefits to the
deserving people. He called on
them to work with positive
mindset in a collaborative spirit.
Dr Mehta maintained that the
Government has adopted a zero
tolerance towards corruption and
has worked on the principle of
increasing citizen participation in
governance, with more account-
ability and transparency in gov-
ernment business.
The Chief Secretary under-
scored that the technological in-
terventions made during the past
couple of years like digitization
of all the services, BEAMS, DBT,
PROOF, PAY-SYS, e-tendering,
mandatory Administrative Ap-
proval and Technical Sanction of
projects are key steps taken by
the Administration in ensuring
accountability and transparency
in the governance system. He con-
tinued that the administration has
no intention to shield any one with
malafide intent and has taken
various steps to enable people to
participate in Governance.
He said since the introduction
of digital governance system in
the UT, filing of RTI applications
by people has seen a sharp dip as
all information about government
schemes, development works,
their implementation and execu-
tion is available in public domain.
He encouraged all of them to of-
ten visit the Janbhagadari portal

of works under implementation
in their areas.
The Chief Secretary also made a
mention of PSGA bolstered by the
feedback mechanisms of Auto-ap-
peal and RAS which has increased
the efficiency of service delivery
to public substantially. He re-
vealed that the delivery of services

86% applicants have given the
positive feedback regarding this
services availed by them.
He added that the effective
implementation of the e-office
system has greatly reduced the
administrative inertia with per-
formance of each user under scan-
ner. He said that the people ear-
lier had no option but to visit gov-
ernment offices for getting their
files moving from one desk to an-
other. He made out that the situa-
tion has changed now with access
to government offices being avail-
able through mobiles and intro-
duction of applications like Mo-
bile Dost, Meri Pehchaan and e-

Chief Secretary said that the gov-
ernment is committed to make the
