ACTIVITY 4

1. The relative compaction of a sand in the field is 94%. The maximum and
minimum dry unit weights of the sand are γ d (max) = 16.2 kN/m3 and γ d (min)= 14.9
kN/m3. For the field conditions.
a. Compute the relative density of compaction.
b. Compute the dry unit weight.
c. Compute the moist unit weight at a moisture content of 8%.

2. The maximum and minimum dry unit weights of sand ware determined in the
laboratory to 16.5 kN/m3 and 14.6kN/m3 respectively. The relative density of
compaction in the field of the same sand is 70%.
a. What is its relative compaction?
b. What is the dry unit weight?
c. What is the moist unit weight at a moisture content of 10%?
3. Specifications for the proposed earth fill require that a soil be compacted at 95%
of Standard Proctor dry density. Test on glacial- fill borrow material indicate γ d (max)
= 124 lb/ ft 3 at an optimum moisture content of 12%. The borrow materials in its
natural condition has a void ratio of 0.60. If Gs= 2.65,
a. Determine the dry weight of soil in embankment.
b. Determine the dry unit weight in borrow area.
c. Determine the minimum volume of borrow required to make 1 ft 3 of
acceptable compacted fill.

4. A sand- cone in place unit test was conducted on the field during the construction
of a proposed embankment of the north diversion extension. The following data
where obtain.
Moisture content of soil from test hole = 12.8%
Weight of sand to fill the funnel = 320g
Weight of wet soil from the test hole = 750g
Unit weight of sand = 15.4 kN/m3
Weight of sand used to fill the test hole and funnel of sand-cone device=
870g.
a. Compute the weight of soil in place.
b. Compute the dry unit weight of the compacted soil.
c. Compute the relative compaction in the field if the maximum dry unit
weight of soil is 21.30 kN/m3
5. A sand cone test has been performed in a recently compacted fill. The test result
was as follows:
Initial weight of sand cone + sand = 6.14 kg
Final weight of sand + cone = 1.94 kg
Weight of sand to fill the cone = 0.96 kg
Weight of soil from hole + bucket = 5.65 kg
Weight of the bucket = 0.55 kg
Moisture Content Test:
Mass of empty moisture content can = 23.11g
Mass of moist soil + can = 273.93g
Mass of oven dry soil + can = 250.10g
The sand used on the sand cone had a unit weight of 12.75 kN/m3 and the fill had
a maximum dry unit weight of 19.04 kN/m3 and an optimum moisture content of
11.7%.
a. Compute the volume of the hole.
b. Compute the dry unit weight of the soil.
c. Compute the relative compaction.
