What are Textual Aids?

• They are also called TEXT FEATURES.


• These are visual elements of a page
that stand out from the main text.
• Text features provide information that
may not be written in the text itself.
• They can be found in textbooks,
magazine articles, newspapers,
reports, web pages and other forms of
non-fiction texts.
Purpose of Textual Aids
Examples of Textual Aids

Print Features – are the use of words to explain


something in the text
Examples:

titles headings glossary

bold letters sub-headings index

italics captions table of contents


Examples of Textual Aids

Graphic Features – are pictures, visual aids, or other


images within a text used to support the author’s
purpose and message
Examples:

graphs graphic timeline bullet points


organizers
LINEAR & NON-LINEAR TEXTS

Linear Text – needs to be read from beginning


to end to make sense of the text
Examples:

educational
novels letters short stories
texts

Non-linear Text – non-sequential
