Growing Bean
Task 1
Learning Objective: Observe the parts of a bean seed and explain its function.
Most plants grow from seeds.Seeds are of different shapes ans size.New plants can grow from the seeds.
1. You are provided with a bean seed.Study the structure of the seed and draw your observation in
the box given below.
2. List the parts you have identified from the specimen provided.

b. help to keep the roots of a plant warm.
c. provide a source of oxygen for a plant to use.
d. prevent worms from eating the roots of the plant.

Learning Objectives:
1. Explain why seeds need to be dispersed from mother plant.
2. Identify the agents of dispersal
3. Describe the features of the seeds that help to disperse

3. Let’s grow a potato plant using a potato.
Things needed: A potato and a knife (under adult supervision)
Method: Take a potato and cut it into 2-3 pieces. Each piece should have at least one eye.
Put these pieces in the soil and water them regularly. Observe the potato plants growing from
the potato pieces.
Observe and draw an eye (bud) that grows into a new plant.
4. Identify the type of stem as underground (tuber, rhizome, bulb), subaerial stem. How does it
reproduce?
