Dearchildren!When the HolyProphetMuhammad,

peaceand blessingsof Allahbe upon him, claimedto
bea Prophetof God,the firstladywho believedin his
messagewashis blessedwife,HazratKhadijahra.
Likewise,Hazrat Sumayyahra was the first lady
to lay downher lifefor the causeof Islam.Although i
~
1
she was old and frail, she bravelybore the torture
inflictedupon her with greatpatienceand courage.
History remembersthis great woman under the
beautifulname of Umme Ammaarbin Yaasirra.
She
was not only a martyr herself, but also the wife of a
martyr and the mother of a martyr. How blessedis
her entirefamily!
Hazrat Sumayyahrawas one of the firstpeopleto
acceptIslam. In fact, she was the seventhperson to
becomea Muslimand, in this way, earned the hon--
our of beingone of the earliestMuslimsin history.
Threeyearsafterthe Holy ProphetMuhammadsas
claimedto be a Prophetof God,he wascommanded
by Allah the Almightyto proclaimit publiclyand
invite people to the One True God. After receiving
this command, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas
startedpreachingthe messageof Islamopenly.
In response to his claims, the disbelievers

2
of Makkah bitterly opposed the Holy Prophet
Muhammadsas.
They becamehis worst enemiesand
inflictedvariouscrueltieson the Muslims.They left
no stoneunturned in torturingMuslimsand keeping
them awayfrom Islam.Evenwealthyand respected
peoplelikeHazratAbu Bakrra,HazratUsmanra, and
HazratTalhahra becamethe targetof their cruelties.
We can only imaginehow much greaterthe per-
secution was upon the Muslim companionswho
werepoor. They had no one to help them, and they
werehopelesslytrappedin the chainsof slavery.
Both men and women sufferedthe most cruel
hardships. However, these great Muslims faced
the crueltiesand hardshipsinflictedupon them by
the disbelieversof Makkah with great braveryand
courage.
Their courageand endurance, as well as their
unshakeablefaith, earned them the everlastingHfe
of Paradiseas they lay down their livesfor the cause
of Islam. The foremostof these great martyrs was
HazratSumayyahra, the daughterof Khabbaat.

Hazrat Sumayyahra, the daughter of Khabbaat,is

included among the highest ranking Sahaabiyaat
[femaleCompanionsof the Prophetsas].
We do not
know much about her ancestors;only the name of
her father,Khabbaat,isknown.Wealsodo not know
when and how she and her familyreachedMakkah.
What is knownis that sheusedto be the slaveofAbu
Huzaifah,son of al-Mugheerah.He was a rich man i
of the Makkantribe called'Banu Makhzum'during
the periodof Ignorance[the pre-Islamictimes].
J
5
She was married to Hazrat Yaasirra, the son of
Aamir. He and his twobrothershad cometo Makkah
from Yemento searchfor their other brother who
waslost.Thishappenedaboutforty--:five
yearsbefore
the Holy ProphetMuhammadsas
claimedpropheth--
ood. Despitetheir search, they couldnot find their
brother. Disappointed, the two brothers of Hazrat
Yaasirra
went backto Yemen,but Yaasirraremained
permanently in Makkah. During his stay, Hazrat
Yaasirraand Abu Huzaifah, son of al--Mugheerah
Makhzumi,becamefriends.Abu Huzaifaharranged
a marriagebetweenhis slaveHazratSumayyahraand
HazratYaasirra.
From this marriage, Hazrat Sumayyahra had
three sons, Hazrat Ammaarra,Hazrat Abdullahra,
and Harees. Her two sons Hazrat Ammaarraand
Hazrat AbdullahraacceptedIslamwhereasthe third
son, Harees,waskilledbeforeIslamwasintroduced.

6
The family of Hazrat Sumayyahra and
Hazrat Yaasirrafrequently saw the Holy Prophet
Muhammadsasashe wasgrowingup. Sincetheir chil-
dren werearound the sameageas the Holy Prophet
Muhammadsas,
they wereableto observehis blessed
Hfe. Theyweredeeplyimpressedby his greatperson-
ality and noble character. When the Holy Prophet
Muhammadsas
claimedto be a Prophet, this family
acceptedIslamright away.
It was a very difficulttime for the Muslimsin
the beginning.Whoeverin MakkahacceptedIslam
becamea targetofthe wrath ofthe disbelievers.
These
cruel people did not spare anyone who accepted
Islam,eventheir closestrelatives.
At that time there was no policeforceto protect
the rightsof citizens.Peoplewereprotectedby their
tribes, and their friends and family. Since Hazrat
Yaasirrawas from Yemenand was an outsiderwith
none ofhis familymembers,and HazratSumayyahra
was still a slave, there was no one to protect them
from this extremecruelty.

Both Hazrat Yaasirra

old and frail, but they remainedfirm in their belief.
Not eventhe most extremecrueltiesof the disbeliev-
erscouldmakethem budgean inchfromIslam.Their
faithwasassolidasa rock;it couldnot besweptaway
by the stormyseasnor the ragingwinds.
The samewas the casewith their sons. It was an

Once the Holy Prophetsaspassed by, as Hazrat
Sumayyahraand her familywere beingtortured. He
said,'O sonsofYaasir!I giveyouthe gladtidingsthat
your destinationisJannah[Paradise]:
At another time when the Holy Prophetsassaw
Hazrat Sumayyahra,Hazrat Yaasirra,and their sons
suffering,he said, 'Be patient. 0, Lord!Forgivethe
children of Yaasir. And indeed You have forgiven
them:
The elderlyYaasirra
diedfrom these crueltiesand
becamea martyr. The disbelieversstill showed no
mercyto this family, and they continuedtheir atroci--
ties on HazratSumayyahraand her children.
One day when Hazrat Sumayyahracame home
after enduring a day of hardships,Abu Jahl started
cursingher. His violenceincreaseduntil he killed

10
her with a spear.Afterthat, he alsomartyredher son,
Abdullahra,with an arrow.Now,the only surviving
personin her familywasher son, HazratAmmaarra.
He went straight to the Holy Prophetsasand
weepingbitterly,relatedthe incidentof his mother's
martyrdomto him. The Holy Prophetsas
told him to
be patient and prayed,'O Allah!Savethe childrenof
Yaasirfrom the fireof Hell!'
The martyrdom of Hazrat Sumayyahraoccurred
in the sixth year of prophethood. She was the first
womanto be martyred.
Abu Jahl, the murderer of Hazrat Sumayyahra,
waskilledin the secondyearof the Hijrah duringthe
Battleof Badr.At that time, the Holy Prophetsas,
the
Chiefof both worlds, thought of Hazrat Sumayyahra
and her great sacrifice. He called out to Hazrat
Ammaarra,the son of HazratSumayyahra,and said,
J.l:1J,ii~, Js -1;
Indeed,Allahhaskilledthe murdererof
yourmother.

HazratSumayyahra standsout in historyasone ofthe

greatestinspirationsof faith. As an elderlywoman
without any means to defend herself, she remained
steadfastin her faith as she was being attackedby
one of the mostpowerfulmen of Makkah. Her brav-
ery is an examplefor us all. Althoughshe was poor
financially,shewasrich spiritually;and althoughshe
was weakand old, she provedstrongand vibrant in
her faith. The courageshe showedin the faceof such
hostilityservesas an inspirationfor us all.
MayAllah,the Exalted,raiseher statusand allow
us to followin her footsteps.Aameen.
