Source Follower:
Source follower is also called as common drain amplifier as shown in Figure.
Gain of source follower is given by,

𝑔𝑚 𝑟0
𝐴𝑣 = (1)
1 + 𝑔𝑚 𝑟0

Output resistance is given by,

1
𝑅𝑜𝑢𝑡 = (2)
1
𝑟0 + 𝑔𝑚

Considering source and substrate are connected.

gmb neglected.
Super Source Follower:

• In super source follower as shown in figure, a common source

amplifier is connected across the common drain stage.

• Input voltage(Vin) is given to gate of M1 which is in common

drain configuration. Output voltage is feedbacked to M1
through M2 which is in common source configuration.

• When current through M1 increases, the gate voltage of M2

also increases which in turn reduces Vout since M2 is in
common source configuration. When Vout is reduced, the
voltage difference between gate and source of M1 decreases
there by reducing the current though M1. This confirms the
negative feedback action.

• I1 and I2 are current load.

Small signal analysis of Super source follower:
Calculation of Voltage gain:

Applying KCL in V2 node:

𝑉2 −𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑔𝑚1 𝑉𝑖𝑛 − 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 + =0
𝑟01

Applying KCL in Vout node:

𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑔𝑚2 𝑉2 + =0
𝑟02

Solving above two equation we get:

𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑔𝑚1 𝑉𝑖𝑛 − 𝑔𝑚1 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 − − =0
𝑟01 𝑟02 𝑔𝑚2 𝑟01

1
=> 𝑔𝑚1 r01 𝑉𝑖𝑛 = (𝑔𝑚1 r01 + 𝑟 + 1) 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
02 𝑔𝑚2

𝒈𝒎𝟏 𝒓𝟎𝟏
=> 𝑨𝒗 = 𝟏 (3)
𝟏 + 𝒈𝒎𝟏 𝒓𝟎𝟏 + 𝒓 𝒈
𝟎𝟐 𝒎𝟐
Calculation of Rout:

𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝑥
Applying KCL at Vx node:
𝑉𝑥
𝐼𝑥 = 𝑔𝑚2 𝑉2 +
𝑟02
And
𝑉𝑥 −𝑉2
= −𝑔𝑚1 𝑉𝑥
𝑟01

=> 𝑉2 = 𝑉𝑥 1 + 𝑟01 𝑔𝑚1

Substituting V2 in Ix equation:

𝑉𝑥 1
= 1
𝐼𝑥 + 𝑔𝑚2 1 + 𝑟01 𝑔𝑚1
𝑟02
𝟏
=> 𝑹𝒐𝒖𝒕 = 𝟏 (4)
𝒓𝟎𝟐
+ 𝒈𝒎𝟐 + 𝒓𝟎𝟏 𝒈𝒎𝟏 𝒈𝒎𝟐
Comparing equation (1) and (3):
Voltage gain is decreased in super source follower as compared to source follower due to negative feedback.

Comparing equation (2) and (4):

Output impedance is also decreased as compared to source follower.

Using this type of feedback we can decrease the output impedance but need to compromise on voltage
gain.
