Subject: New cold-start time switch for 1988–89 Camry with 2VZ-FE engine
Symptom: Hard starting and long cranking time when cold
Source: Toyota service bulletin Volume 10, Engine 014 (October 1989)
A 1988–89 Camry with the 2VZ-FE engine may require a long period of starter cranking after
a dead soak of 2 to 5 hours.
If cold driveability with these vehicles is good (except for this problem), a new cold-start
injector time switch is available to correct the hard starting. Toyota technicians report
excellent results with these corrections.

z Before replacing the cold start switch:

1. Make sure that all engine mechanical, fuel, and electrical and electronic systems perform
within specifications.
2. Check the number stamped on one side of the old switch hexhead:
a. The old switch should have “22” stamped on it, indicating it has an operating
temperature of 72°F (22°C).
b. The replacement switch is stamped “35” to indicate it has an operating temperature
of 95°F (35°C).
Original and replacement switch part numbers are shown in the table below
