A. Readings/Discussions

What is PAR?

The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is an area in the Northwestern

Pacific where PAGASA, the Philippines' national meteorological agency monitors weather
occurrences. Significant weather disturbances, specifically tropical cyclones, that enter or
develop in the PAR are given Philippine-specific names.

What is meant when a typhoon has entered the PAR?

When a typhoon is outside the PAR it has an international name. When it enters the PAR, our
weather agency PAG-ASA names the typhoon based on local name as a sign that the weather
system enters the country's PAR.

Torrential rains, flash floods thunderstorms and typhoons—these are not “news” to
Filipinos of any age. They are common occurrences in this tropical country. The country’s
weather bureau, PAGASA, updates its website with real-time satellite images such as the one
shown below, to track the path of any weather disturbances and warn the public of its possible
effects
Note that the eastern boundary of the
PAR is much farther from the country than the
western boundary. That is because most tropical
cyclones that hit the Philippines come from the
Pacific Ocean. The wide area gives us more time
to prepare before the tropical cyclone hits land.

B. Exercises
Exercise 1 Plotting the PAR

Directions:

1.Plot the following points on the map like below ( Figure 1). Use a separate graphing
paper if available or a bond paper.
Points Latitude , Longitude
a. 5ᵒN, 115ᵒE
b. 15ᵒN, 115ᵒE
c. 21ᵒN, 120ᵒE
d. 25ᵒN, 120ᵒE
e. 25ᵒN, 135ᵒE
f. 5ᵒN, 135ᵒE

2. Connect the plotted points. The region within is the Philippine Area of Responsibility
or PAR. It is the job of PAGASA to monitor all tropical cyclones that enter this area.
Example: Points A and B are done for you.
Exercise 2 Tracking a tropical cyclone

Directions:

1. Use the latitude and longitude (lat-long)in the table below to track the location of
Sendong. Plot each lat-long pair on the map with the PAR. Then connect the plotted points.
Use the same graphing paper or bond paper which you have plotted the PAR in the previous
activity.

Example: Points A and D are done for you.

C. Assessment/Application/Outputs

Directions: Answer the following questions with a YES if the given statement gives a
correct information or NO if it does not.

Example: No 1. If a typhoon is located at 15ᵒN, 138ᵒE, it is within the PAR.

1. PAGASA is a Philippine government agency responsible in giving the weather forecast.

2. The eastern boundary of the PAR is much farther compared to the western boundary this
is because most of the tropical cyclones came from Pacific Ocean giving us more time to
prepare before a tropical cyclone hits the land.
3. When a typhoon enters the PAR, the PAGASA gives its local name.
4. PAGASA has nothing to do with heavy rainfall brought by a tropical cyclone.
5. Even when a storm is still outside the PAR, PAGASA is already monitoring it.
6. If the typhoon is located 7ᵒN, 130ᵒE, it is outside the PAR.
7. Sendong was formed in the South China Sea from a low-pressure area (LPA).
8. If the typhoon is at 19ᵒN, 117ᵒE it is inside the PAR.
9. Some part of Taiwan is inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
10. Typhoon Sendong left the PAR on December 19, 2011.

D. Suggested Enrichment/Reinforcement Activity/ies

Knowing on how to track a typhoon, what would you do before, during, and after a
typhoon? Give at least two suggestions. Write your answers in the table below.
