I. Introduction

Typhoon is a natural disaster that is being experienced by most countries


in the world including the Philippines. Although their effects on human
populations can be devastating, tropical cyclones can relieve drought conditions
and could carry away heat energy which could play an important role in
regulating global climate. Thus, it is of most significance to have sufficient
knowledge on such phenomena for beneficial purposes

In this activity sheet, you will be provided with activities that will
improve your understanding in tracing the path of typhoons that
enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) using map and
tracking data

II. Learning Competencies


This Learning Activity Sheets was designed and written with you in
mind. It is here to help you to trace the path of typhoons that enters the
Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) using map and tracking data.

III. Objectives
After going through this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:

1. Familiarize the different tropical cyclone categories;


2. Plot the Philippine area of responsibility using its latitude and longitude;
3. Trace the path of a typhoon that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility
(PAR) using a map and tracking data and
4. Shows appreciation about PAGASA’s great help in giving weather forecast.
IV. Discussion

What is a tropical cyclone?


Tropical cyclone is one of the most destructive natural disasters that
affects many countries around the globe especially the countries near the pacific
ring of fire. In the Philippines most people would say all tropical cyclone is a
typhoon but actually typhoon is just a category of a tropical cyclone. Tropical
cyclone is known as Bagyo in Filipino. They always form over oceans where sea
surface temperature, also air temperatures are greater than 26°C. It results in
annual losses in lives and properties that affect the economy. The impact of this
is greatest over the coastal areas or places near bodies of water. Typhoons or
tropical cyclone differ its name depending on the region, in the North Atlantic,
Eastern North Pacific and South Pacific Ocean, they are called "hurricanes". In
the eastern part of the Southern Indian Ocean, it is "willy-willy", and in the
Western North Pacific Ocean, they are called "typhoons". The Philippines is
prone to tropical cyclones due to its geographical location which generally
produce heavy rains and flooding of large areas and strong winds which result
in casualties to human life like destructions to crops and properties.
What are the effects of tropical cyclone?
Tropical cyclone results to strong winds, tornadoes, and flooding from
heavy rains and storm surge that cause the greatest loss in lives and
destruction to properties in coastal areas.
What are the Categories of tropical cyclone?

Tropical cyclones reach their greatest intensity while located over warm
waters and they begin to weaken as they move in land. The intensity of tropical
cyclones differ thus we can classify them based upon their degree of intensity
associated with winds. The table below is adopted by PAGASA as of 01 May
2015 as follows

How does PAGASA provides tracking data and forecasting of a tropical


cyclone?
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA) is a meteorological agency that monitors weather
occurrences specifically tropical cyclones that enter or develop in the PAR.

Forecasting involves predicting where a tropical cyclone is going to track
over the next five days, every 6 to 12 hours. The history of tropical cyclone track
forecasting has evolved from a single-station approach to a comprehensive
approach which uses a variety of meteorological tools and methods to make
predictions. The weather of a particular location can show signs of the
approaching tropical cyclone like increasing cloudiness, falling barometric
pressure, increasing tides, squalls, and heavy rainfall.
When should PAGASA give name to a tropical cyclone?

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services


Administration (PAGASA) give local names to tropical cyclones when they enter
or form inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)

What is Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)?

This is the smallest and innermost monitoring domain, whose boundary


is closest to the Philippine Islands. The exact dimensions of this domain are the
area of the Western North Pacific bounded by imaginary lines connecting the
coordinates: 5°N 115°E, 15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E, 25°N 135°E and 5°N 135°E.

Activity # 3 TRACKING A TROPICAL CYCLONE

Direction: Track the tropical cyclone using the data provided detached the MAP
and used it in plotting the points and answer the guided questions and write
your it on your answer sheet

Typhoon Mangkhut (known locally as Ompong) made landfall in the


north-eastern Philippines in the early hours of 15 September 2018. With
sustained wind speeds of more than 205 km/h and gusts of 255 km/h, the
typhoon was the strongest storm to hit the Philippines since Typhoon Haiyan
(known locally as Yolanda) in 2013.Try to track this Super typhoon.
