IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing or presenting Review on climate change.

the new lesson
Ask the students with the following questions:
 What is climate change?
 What are the causes of climate change?

Prepared by: Luciana P. Barredo

t
B. Establishing a purpose for Picture Analysis
the lesson
Cut-up-Photos
 Cut up a photo showing the effect of El Niño and La Niña
phenomena into 8 pieces. Divide students into groups based
on the number of pieces from each picture puzzle.
 Give each student in a group one of the pieces. Have each
student analyze the piece.
 After they analyze each piece, have students join them
together like a puzzle.
 Each group member can share his or her ideas with the group.
 Students will create an overall interpretation uniting their
interpretations from the individual pieces.

C. Presenting examples of  What do the pictures have in common?

the new lesson
 What climatic phenomena you can derive from the pictures?
D. Discussing new concepts  Let the students read the material provided in the module
and practicing new skills about the Impact of Climate Change and El Niño and La
#1 Niña. Let them take down notes on important points that
could be used later in the discussion.

Prepared by: Luciana P. Barredo

t
 Discuss the topic through slide decks.

nia?from_action=save
Guide questions for the discussion:
 What is El Niño?
 What are the characteristics of El Niño?
 What causes El Niño?
 What is La Niña?
 What are the characteristics of La Niña?
 What causes La Niña
 How do El Niño and La Niña affect weather patterns?
 What are the impacts of El Niño and La Niña?

E. Discussing new concepts Let the students make a Venn Diagram differentiating El Niño and La
and practicing new skills Niña phenomena.

F. Developing Mastery Compare and Contrast

 How are they different?

Prepared by: Luciana P. Barredo

t
 How are they the same?
 How are we adapting to the impacts of climate change?
(Possible answers: wearing of cooler clothes to combat heat
during summer, creating in-door activities during extreme heat
days, building houses in higher grounds especially in areas prone
to flood)
G. Finding practical  Ask students to think of a situation when change or a new
applications of concepts event was happening in their lives. What did they do to
and skills in daily living adapt to this change or event. Cite examples.
Possible scenario: transition from elementary to high school (
change in teachers, school environments)

 Relate this to the climate change adaptations.

H. Making Generalizations Make a graphic organizer showing the differences of El Niño and
and abstractions about La Niña phenomena, on its characteristics and impacts to the
the lesson environment and people.
I. Evaluating learning Give a 5-item test.
Answer the following questions briefly.
1. What are the two climatic phenomena that we encounter?
2. What is the phenomenon that we encounter when there is a
lengthy warming in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean?
3. What is the phenomenon that we encounter when there is
unusual cooling of water in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean?
4. What is the shared characteristics of El Niño and La Niña
phenomena?
5. Why is it important to take actions against climate change?
