Philippine Area of Responsibility

Introduction
PAGASA forecasters use three domains where they monitor, analyze and forecast tropical
cyclones: the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Tropical Cyclone Advisory Domain and the
Tropical Cyclone Information Domain. These domains can be visualized as "three-layered
zones" that enclose the country. If a tropical cyclone is present inside these domains, PAGASA is
obliged to provide information about the weather disturbance to the public. Because most
tropical cyclones come from the broad expanse of ocean east of the country, the eastern
boundary of each domain is farther from the Philippine Islands than the western boundary.

Learning Competency: Infer why the Philippines is prone to typhoons.S8ES-IId19

Objectives:
a. Define Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). S8ES-IId19.
b. Plot the PAR in a map. S8ES-IId19.6.2
What you need? Downloaded worksheet, graphing paper, ruler, coloring pen
What to do?
1. Plot the following coordinates on the map: or you may visit this website and download the
activity entitled Plotting the PAR fhttps://dochub.com/eveliasadullo/BxL1we/m2-unit-2-g8
POINTS LATITUDE, LONGITUDE
A 50N, 1150E
B 150N, 1150E
C 210N, 1200E
D 250N, 1200E
E 250N, 1350E
F 50N, 1350E
2. Connect the plotted points. The region within is the Philippine Area of Responsibility or PAR. It is
the job of PAGASA to monitor all tropical cyclones that enter this area.
3. If a typhoon is located at 150 N, 1380 E, is it within the PAR?
4. How about if the typhoon is at 190 N, 1170 E, is it inside the PAR?
