Empower Para-athletes

The aim of this project is to show that parasports are just as important as regular sports, and that we
should be more inclusive towards people with disabilities.

Parasports are a type of sport played by people with physical or intellectual disabilities, and has existed
for many centuries. Deaf individuals, people with physical impairments, and those with intellectual
disabilities make up the three main disability categories in parasport. Each group has its own history,
structure, and philosophy, and each group has contributed significantly to what is thought of as modern
parasport.

The event, which began in Rome in 1960 with 400 athletes from 23 nations, has developed into a
worldwide spectacle. Over the years, it has had a positive impact on society as it expands in scope and
magnitude, promoting social inclusivity and breaking the stigma against disabled people.

However, even in today’s world it hasn’t been easy to shine a light upon parasports. There aren’t many
parasports events being held aside from big events like the Olympics, and etc. In addition, it also isn’t
easy to find proper training for disabled people who dream of becoming para-athletes. A 2020 research
showed that the great majority of athletics websites lacked information on the programming provided
for disabled athletes.

For this project’s outcome, we decided to make an informative video about para sports and why they
should be available outside of big events. We hope this outcome will bring awareness and encourage
people to host para sports events in more accessible places like schools, neighbourhoods, etc. so
everyone can experience the fun of sports.
