General Instructions:
a) Each student has to do this mid-term test within a day counted from the time of the test is
given (Deadline: Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 08.00 AM).
b) Each student must do the test by handwriting and send back the answer sheet to your English
Linguistics lecturer by email/WhatsApp/courier service.

Questions:
1. The distinctive feature(s) of minimal pairs can be measured from each segmental phoneme
feature: (vowels: the height of the tongue, the position of the tongue, the protrusion or rounding,
of the lips, the state of the muscles); (consonants: voicing, place of articulation, manner of
articulation).
Example: The words sue /su/ and zoo /zu/ => the difference is due to the voicelessness of the /s/
in contrast to the voicing of the /z/. Therefore, voicing (+/- voiced) is a distinctive
feature of English consonants /s/ and /z/ in the words sue and zoo.

You are asked to select freely any words of minimal pairs, then to list and to identify the
distinctive features of those minimal pairs of following the criteria:
a. Vowel in medial position d. Consonant in medial position
b. Diphthong in medial position e. Consonant in final position
c. Consonant in initial position f. Consonant cluster in initial position

2. Please pick out and analyse any 10 (ten) group of words that represent allomorphs by
transcribing the words into their phonetics transcription.
Example: Group of words: slammed /slæmd/; slipped /slIpt/; stilted /stIltId/
Allomorphs: /d/ in “slammed”; /t/ in “slipped” and /Id/ in “stilted”

3. Please select one any short passage of English news article taken from online English
newspapers (The Jakarta Post, BBC, The Times, The Guardian, etc.) that discusses about
“Covid-19 Booster” (the article’s title is free). Once you have selected the news article, write
the text of the article, list and analyse the following issues found in the article:
a. The classes of words (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, determiners, conjunctions).
b. The types of bound morphemes (derivational and inflectional).

4. Give five examples for:

5. Please pick out and list any 10 (ten) word series into taxonomic hierarchies.
