General Instructions:
a) Each student has to do this UPM test within a day counted from the time of the test is given
(Deadline: Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at 01.30 PM).
b) Each student must do the test by handwriting and send back the answer sheet to your English
Linguistics lecturer by email/WhatsApp/courier service.

Questions:
1. Please pick out three pairs of words that have the following semantic relations and transcribe
the words into phonetic transcription.
a. Synonymy e. Hyponymy
b. Antonymy f. Homophone
c. Polysemy g. Homograph

2. Please select one any short passage of English news article taken from online English
newspapers (The Jakarta Post, BBC, The Times, The Guardian, etc.) that discusses about
“Omicron” (the article’s title is free). Once you have selected the news article, write the text
of the article, decide and list the following cases found in the article based on Fillmore’s Case
Grammar model:
a. Agentive e. Source
b. Experiencer f. Goal
c. Instrumental g. Locative
d. Objective h. Temporal

3. Please make a short conversation that contains each of five classifications of speech acts in line
with Searle’s proposition as below:
a. Assertive d. Expressive

b. Directive e. Declarative
c. Commissive

4. Please do the analysis on the expression “Don’t play with fire” by looking at the interplay of the
three speech acts of locution, illocution and perlocution.

5. Dialogue 1:
A : Why…..Why are you here?!
B : Because that’s what friends do. I know, I know, I chose some words
carelessly! I know that you were in a dark place, but I also know that
you need to show your boss that you are friend of the winner.

Does dialogue 1 above contain of the flouting maxim of quantity? If Yes/No, please give your
reason thoroughly.

Dialogue 2:
Wife : Where are you off to?
Husband : I was thinking of going out to get some of that funny white stuff
for somebody.
Wife : OK, but don’t be long--dinner’s nearly ready.

In line with the dialogue 2, do you think that the flouting maxim of manner exists? If Yes/No,
please explain the reason.
