Working across departments or cross departmental collaboration
is more than just a common term in the present complex business
environment. Professionals from one department are increasingly
working with others from various departments as part of their
growing roles within their companies, and they have found
that such collaboration is essential to company performance
and advancement. Not only does collaboration make business
strategies run well, but it also helps overcome problems and builds
relationships among employees to reach the company potentials.
Although collaboration has positive results, knocking down the barriers between people and departments is
not without difficulties. Some of them are (1) the varied personalities, (2) stressful situations, (3) conflicting
deadlines, and (4) different business terms of departments. However,
these problems can be overcome through respect for each other,
empathy for and recognition of others, updates for all, and good
communication skills. With determined efforts, professionals from
different departments will be able to work together to reach the
company goal.
Despite the problems, working across departments has great
benefits for companies. Employees gain an overall view and
deeper understanding of their work. It also streamlines processes
in company projects. Collaboration means sharing ideas, thus
enriching and motivating every employee involved.
TASK 1
1. Why is it important to work across departments?
2. What can be the problems and the benefits to the company and to
individual employee?
3. What can be done to overcome the problems?
4. Do you also work across departments?
