KMK33503 Plant Design For Food Technology 1

TASK 2
DUE DATE: 21st May 2023@11.59PM

A progress report will be submitted to coordinator. The report will be written based on teamwork and
every individual member in the team must contribute. Marks will be given based on the progress of the
task.

Please USED THE REPORT TEMPLATE GIVEN for the progress report submission.

The content of Task 2 includes:

1) Material Balance Analysis

2) Energy Balance Analysis
3) Simulation Process
4) Utilities Characteristics

In the previous Task 1, the process description, and the process flow diagram (PFD) should have been
completed. In this task, your team will focus on the development and verification of the plant wide
material and energy balances, together with the utility’s specification. The task is referred to THE
WHOLE PLANT.

1. Material Balance Analysis

• Calculate the material balances for your chosen equipment. Overall, every equipment in
your plant must be counted. The manual calculation is only for your references and will
be verified by your supervisor.
• You may use the information of conversion and selectivity from the previous task. Mass
balance calculation for each of the equipment must include the following:
o All the assumptions made for the particular calculation.
o The total mass flow rate of all the inlet and outlet streams of the particular unit
o The total molar flow rate of all the inlet and outlet streams of the particular unit
o The stream material composition in terms of mass and mole fractions
• For reactor, perform the mass balance with reaction including all the recycle streams (if
any) to the reactor.

2. Energy Balances Analysis

• Calculate the energy balances for your chosen equipment. Overall, every equipment in your
plant must be counted. The manual calculation is only for your references and will be
verified by your supervisor.
• The energy balance calculation for each of the equipment must include the following:
o All the assumptions made for the calculation (datum/reference point)
o All the related heat or energy information (with reference) such as the heat of
formation, heat of reaction, heat of generation, enthalpy of stream/mixture, heat
capacities, etc
o The total mass flow rate of all the inlet and outlet streams of the particular unit,
including the heating or cooling streams
o The total molar flow rate of all the inlet and outlet streams of the particular unit,
including the heating or cooling streams
o The stream material composition in terms of mass and mole fractions
o The temperature and pressure of all the inlet and outlet streams of the unit
o The heating or cooling duties of each of the heat transfer equipment (in kW)

3. HYSYS / SuperPro Simulation

• Simulate all the material and energy balance results for your equipment using
SIMULATION TOOLS such as Aspen/ Aspen Plus/ HYSYS/ Super Pro until converge.
Please include justification on your fluid package selection.
• Submit workbook data from Aspen/ Aspen Plus /HYSYS/Super Pro and flowsheet of your
plant for your progress report Task 2.

4. Characteristic of Utilities
Based on the calculation of material and energy balances, tabulate (refer to Table 1) the specific
details of the utilities needed in the plant for whole plant in a table. The details of each utility
streams must include the following:
• Stream name/number/tagging as per the PFD
• Type of utility (water/ steam/ gas/ refrigerant/ fluid/ electricity/ compressed air/ inert gas/
fuel/ etc)
• Purpose of the utility used (heating/ cooling/ purging/ power supply/ etc)
• Phase state of the inlet and outlet utility streams
• Temperature and pressure of the inlet and outlet utility streams
• Mass flow rate
