EXERCISE 1: WORLD FACTBOOK

What topic(s) caught your attention?
Topic 1: No citizenship by birth
In Uganda, you cannot be a citizen solely if you are born there. For example, if I was born to two
foreign parents in Uganda, I would not be considered a Ugandan. This is a surprise to me
because it is very different from how it is here in the Philippines and even how it is in the United
States of America. In the Philippines and USA, so long as you are born in the country, you will
be considered a citizen of the country.

The ways for one to become a Ugandan citizen is either by being descended from a native-born
citizen of Uganda or by being naturalized (living an aggregate of 20 years, with the last two
being continuous). The topic is interesting because it is a new concept to me.

Topic 2: Electricity generation sources

This is also a surprise to me as 86.4% of Uganda’s electricity generation sources is
hydroelectricity. Although it makes sense because of the vast number of lakes and rivers in the
country, it still came as a shock because, here in the Philippines electricity is generated mainly
through fossil fuels, in fact the CIA World Fact Book reported that 77.6% is generated through
electricity.

I hope that the Philippines can one day generate as much electricity without the use of fossil
fuels. Carbon emissions and air pollution must be overcome in order to progress further,
especially with the current state of the world and beliefs of people.

What is the latest GDP-Per Capita of your country? What does this tell you?
The GDP per capita of the country is $2,200, this means that the average Ugandan contributes
only $2000 to the economy per year. This is mainly because of low income jobs, and it is
testimonial to the notion that Uganda is a third world country.

EXERCISE 2: MARKET REPORTS / STATISTICS

2.1. International Trade Center
In one paragraph, summarize what you learned about the Philippines
The website highlights the Philippines trade partners, the top three being the United States of
America, China, and Japan. It shows that currently, electrical machinery is the highest exported
product of the Philippines. It also indicates that the Philippines can capitalize soon on exporting
Smart cards; electronic integrated circuits; LED lamps, with this product group having an export
potential of 45 Billion USD.

Scroll down further and visit the SME Trade Academy, then register here to get access to
various short courses. Register to at least 2 courses that interests you. List the courses here:
1. Understanding the Role of Trade Support Institutions
2. Internationalization of Digital Businesses

Select <Ye Community> and join the platform to gain access to youth activities that may be of
interest to you. What did you find exciting here?
Ye Community showed how young entrepreneurs and businesspeople could collectively gather
and build sustainable businesses. I found it amazing how people from all over the world could
come together and discuss business with one another. Hopefully one day, I can attend a youth
activity, meet tons of people and learn a lot from them.

2.2. Trademap – trademap.orgLinks to an external site.

Which were the top 3 exported product groups to the world in the latest year’s figure?
The top 3 exported product groups in the world were the following:
1. Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and
reproducers, television
2. Machinery, mechanical appliances, nuclear reactors, boilers; parts thereof
3. Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances;
mineral . . .
Out of this list, which product group shows the highest growth in Philippine exports?
From the list of the top 3 exported product groups, “Machinery, mechanical appliances, nuclear
reactors, boilers; parts thereof” had the highest growth in the Philippines, at 72% annual growth
in value between 2020-2021.
Among the Philippines' most exported products, which countries are the biggest competitors
for that product?
Hong Kong, the United States of America, China, Japan, Singapore, and Germany compete for
the Philippines' most exported product, electrical machinery, equipment, and parts.

2.3. World Trade Organization

Who and What is the WTO? What do they do?
The World Trade Organization is an organization that provides opportunities for
governments of different countries to negotiate and trade with one another. It helps smoothen out
trading transactions between different countries and resolve problems that they may face.

How many countries are members of the WTO? Which country/(ies) is/are the newest
member? When did she/they become a member?
It has 164 members; these 164 countries represent an estimated 98% of the world’s trade.
Afghanistan was the latest to join the WTO, joining on July 29, 2016.

Go to ‘Documents and Resources’ and record the things/ issues that you found most
interesting, and why?
I stumbled across a publication entitled Trade Therapy: Deepening Cooperation to Strengthen
Pandemic Defenses, it highlights the necessity for action and reform. The publication stated that
the cost of action is likely to be dwarfed by the potential cost of another pandemic. Not only is
this interesting, but it is true and alarming. There is a need for reformation and there is a need to
try our best in making sure that another global pandemic will never happen again.

Search for issues, news, information that is most relevant to the country assigned to you.
The subpage entitled Covid-19 and trade –Uganda indicates that no measures were taken
affecting trades in goods, affecting trades in services, affecting trade in intellectual property,
support measures, and notifications on Covid 19

How is it related to your business?

This is significant to Uganda’s Gold business because it shows a huge potential amount of
revenue because 320,158 tonnes of gold could be extracted. One tonne of gold alone could be
sold for millions of USD. This amount of gold could be greatly impactful and imperative to
Ugandan progression, if managed properly. Uganda must be able to maximize upon this without
bringing any damages,
