United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) also known as the United Nations
Children’s Fund announced that more than 1,70,000 grave violations against children in conflict were

Pacific Island Nation Palau becomes first nation in the world to ban ‘reef-toxic’ sun cream
Palau has become the first nation to ban sun cream which damages the coral reefs, sea life and are toxic
to juvenile wildlife species. The sun cream consists of oxybenzone and octinoxate absorbs UV
(UltraViolet) rays, which causes water more acidic, makes corals susceptible to bleaching and agitating
fish stocks. Following Palau, Hawaii will ban sun cream from 2021. Palau is a Pacific Island country in
the Western Pacific Ocean near Philippines.
U.N's decarbonisation target of Shipping industry could cost over $1 trillion: UMAS study
According to a new study by experts from University Maritime Advisory Services (UMAS), London,
England, which includes University College London’s (UCL) Energy Institute & the Energy Transitions
Commission,the shipping industry must spend a scale of investment of at least $1 trillion (£0.8 trillion)
on new fuel technology to decarbonise the international shipping if it is to meet UN emissions targets by
2050. Since about 90% of world trade is done by sea, Global shipping is responsible for around 2.2 % of
the world’s CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. United Nations (UN) specialized shipping agency, the
International Maritime Organization (IMO),has set itself the target of reducing carbon emissions by 50

WEF to conserve 1 trillion trees by 2030 to combat climate change through 1t.org
World Economic Forum (WEF) and its partners have launched 1t.org which is a multistakeholder effort
to support efforts to grow, restore and conserve 1 trillion trees around the world inorder to restore the
biodiversity and help combat climate change. 1t.org project aims to unite all the countries’ govts, non-
govt. organisations, businesses & individuals in to restore nature in a mass scale. The initiative is set up
with initial support of Salesforce (CRM) Chairman Marc and his wife Lynne Benioff who are also

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina launched e-passport in Dhaka; South Asia’s 1st and 119th e-passport in
the world
Prime Minister (PM) of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wazed has launched e-passport in Dhaka,
Bangladesh as Mujib Century year gift to the country. Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia and
119th countries in the world to have an e-passport facility. Malaysia is the first country in the world to
launch this facility in 1998. This e-passport consists of embedded chip which contains biometric data,
digital Photograph and signature of the passport holder which will help to control fake passports in the
country.
Pakistan, Somalia declare locusts a ‘national emergency’ after worst locust invasion
The Government of Somalia announced a National Emergency on Locusts (family- Acrididae) attack
because these insects caused major damage to the food supply in one of the world’s poorest countries &
and most vulnerable regions in the world. Somalia is the 1st country to make such a declaration & its
declaration aims to intensify the national effort to combat these insects. The Prime Minister (PM) of
Pakistan Imran Khan has also declared a national emergency due to the massive locusts attack. These

Britain’s Prince Charles unveiled a new Children’s protection fund for India as part of British Asian
Trust and announced Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (Katy Perry), American singer as the new ambassador
for the British Asian Trust Children’s Protection Fund for India during a function at Banqueting House
in London, England. The British Asian Trust Children’s Protection Fund will protect the child from child
labour, child sexual abuse, anti-trafficking fund in South Asia. The British Asian Trust is chaired by
Indian-origin businessman Manoj Badale.
G7 to work with WHO, EU, China to tackle nCoV; Hong Kong reported 1st Coronavirus death
The G7(Group of 7) countries has announced to work with the World Health Organisation(WHO), the
European Union (EU) and People’s Republic of China, inorder to tackle the recent outbreak of Novel
Coronavirus(nCoV). Meanwhile Hong Kong has reported the 1st nCoV death. Hong Kong was the 2nd
place outside mainland China to report the death of a coronavirus patient.

Pak High Commission issues visas to Indian pilgrims to visit Katas Raj temples
The Pakistan High Commission has issued visas to a group of Indian Hindu pilgrims for visiting Katas
Raj temples in Chakwal city of Pakistan’s Punjab province from February 19 to 25, 2020. This visit
governs under The Pakistan-India Protocol on visits to Religious Shrines (1974) signed by both the
countries. Katas Raj temple is also known as Qila katas or complex of Katas temple is considered as one

UAE becomes 1st Arab Nation to issue license to operate a reactor at its Nuclear power plant
The United Arab Emirates representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency Mr. Hamad al-
kaabi announced that the National Nuclear Regulator has issued an Operating license for a reactor at its
Barakah nuclear power plant and becomes the 1st Arab country in the world to operate a nuclear
power plant. The Barakah nuclear power plant on the Gulf coast of Abu Dhabi is built by the Korea

22nd edition of World language database, Ethnologue
The 22nd edition of the world language database Ethnologue stated Hindi, as the 3rd most spoken
language of the world in 2019 with 615 million speakers. English language was at the top of the list with
1,132 million speakers and Mandarin Chinese was at the 2nd position with 1,117 million speakers.
Ethnologue publish an yearly database of living languages of the world, since its establishment in 1951.
European commission launches global coalition for biodiversity to raise public awareness
In view of the crucial UN (United Nations) summit on biodiversity (also known as Convention on
Biological Diversity-COP15) to be held in Kunming, China in October 2020) and on the occasion of
the World Wildlife Day on March 3, 2020, the European Commission has launched a new global
coalition for biodiversity called ‘United for Biodiversity’ in Monaco. The coalition consists of national
parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, zoos, science and natural history museums from around the world

Indian female labour-force participation dropped from 34% in 2006 to 24.8% in 2020: UNGC
Study
In accordance with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) India study, India is the only country
among the 153 surveyed countries where the economic gender gap is larger than the political gap. Its
female labour-force participation has declined from 34% in 2006 to 24.8% in 2020. If women
participation raised in the labour force same as men then it can boost India’s GDP (Gross Domestic
Product) by 27%.

UN adopts political declaration on women’s rights during CSW64 meet in New York, US
The United Nations (UN), an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace
and security, has adopted a stripped-down political declaration, in which they pledged to step up action
to fully implement the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality, agreed

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has initiated the creation of the COVID Action Platform with the
support of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Wellcome Trust. This first of its kind platform,
operating globally, is open to all businesses and industry groups, as well as other stakeholders, for
integrated and collective business action to mitigate the risk and impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).
The Forum has established a special team to support the platform’s work.

OPEC and Russia agreed to cut crude oil production amid Coronavirus crisis
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC – Headquarters at Vienna, Austria), an

UNCTAD predicted $3.4 trillion debt for developing countries in 2020-2021; Global Debt Deal

As per the Geneva based United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) report titled
“From the Great Lockdown to the Great Meltdown: Developing Country Debt in the Time of Covid-19″,
the developing countries’ repayments on their public external debt will increase between $2.6 trillion
and $3.4 trillion in 2020 and 2021 amid COVID-19 pandemic. For high-income developing countries it
will rise between $2 trillion and $2.3 trillion while for middle and low-income countries it will mount
between $666 billion and $1.06 trillion.

As per the United States Treasury Department’s latest data the India’s holding of US government
securities has gone up by over USD 13 billion (bn) in a month to a record high of USD 177.5 bn at the end
of February. Japan is the country which has US govt securities worth over USD 1.268 trillion(tn) at
February end, the most by any foreign country, followed by China with holdings of USD 1.092 tn & United
Kingdom at USD 403.2 bn & India ranks 13th position.
Iran approves currency denomination bill to slash 4 zeros from Rial and covert to Toman
The parliament of Iran has approved a bill on national currency denomination, which allows to cutting
four zeros from its national currency Rial & to rename it as ‘Toman’ which is equal to 10,000 rials. It has
taken this major decision to prevent a major fall in currency due to US (United States) sanctions.

eradication
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nation (UN) postal agency released a
commemorative postage stamp on the 40th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox. The stamp was
designed and developed by Sergio Baradat, United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) in
collaboration with WHO. Tedros Adhanom expressed his gratitude to a top Indian-origin Atul Khare for
making this commemorative stamp possible.

to donate $ 6.7 billion in funds for essentials within vulnerable countries to fight against COVID-19

BRICS’ New Development Bank provides USD 1 billion loan to India to fight COVID-19
The Shanghai based New Development Bank of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)
countries has disbursed USD 1 billion emergency assistance loan to India. The ‘Emergency Assistance
Program Loan’ to India was approved by the NDB Board of Directors on April 30, and it is aimed at
supporting the Indian government to contain the spread of COVID-19 and to provide financial aid.
CDC of the United States promises 3.6 million USD to India to combat COVID-19
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States of America has promised 3.6
million USD (around 27 crores) to the government of India, the first tranche of funding to help in
strengthening the India to combat against the COVID-19 pandemic and to increase the laboratory
capacity of SARS-COV-2 testing and to help molecular diagnostics and serology.
Forest loss rate globally declined from 2015 to 2020: FRA 2020
According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2020 released by the Rome based Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), the forest loss rate in 2015-2020 has declined to an estimated 10 million
hectares(mha), down from 12 mha in 2010-2015. Among the world’s regions, Africa has the largest
annual rate of net forest loss in 2010–2020, whereas Asia has the highest net gain of forest area in 2010–
2020, followed by Oceania and Europe. More than 54% of the world’s forests were in only five countries
namely- Russia, Brazil, Canada, USA and China.

Israel has named a street in Tel Aviv after Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore on his 159th birth
anniversary to honour his valuable contributions in the field and to mankind. He was born on May 7,
1861, in Calcutta. In Bengal Rabindra Jayanti is celebrated on the 25th day of the Bengali month of
Boishakh. The capital and currency of Israel is Jerusalem and Shekel respectively.
Nepal approves new political map including India’s Kalapani, Lipulekh as its territory
Nepal’s cabinet has accepted a new political map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura under
its territory. The new map shows the northern, southern, eastern and western international borders of
Nepal. The politics and administrative systems of the areas adjacent to these borders are also mentioned.
The Lipulekh Pass is a remote western place near the disputed border between Nepal and India, Kalapani.
Both India and Nepal consider Kalapani as their integral part. India calls it part of Pithoragarh district of
Uttarakhand while Nepal is part of Dharchula district.
India sets up military war game centre called ‘INDIA’ for Ugandan Defence forces
The Indian Association Uganda (IAU) and Indian Military Advisory and Training Team for Uganda Peoples
Defence Forces (UPDF) have jointly set up military war game centre called ‘INDIA’ at the Uganda Senior
Command and Staff College in Jinja District of Uganda with a cost of over 1 billion Ugandan shillings or
$2,65,000. The centre was inaugurated by the Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The capital
and currency of Uganda are Kampala and Ugandan Shilling respectively.
India’s crude steel output slips 65.2% to 3.13 MT in Apr: Worldsteel April 2020 report
According to the Brussels, Belgium based World Steel Association’s (worldsteel) monthly crude steel
report for April 2020, India’s crude steel output declined by 65.2% to 3.137 million tonnes (MT) during
April, 2020 in comparison to the 9.021 MT of crude steel production in April 2019. The report included
64 steel production nations reporting to the worldsteel.
WHO and IOC team up to improve health through sport amidst COVID-19 Pandemic
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have teamed up
to fight the battle against Covid-19 and have signed an agreement to work together to promote health
through sport and physical activity. Also, WHO estimates that 1 in 4 adults is not active enough and more
than 80% of the world’s adolescent population come under this category.
US left open skies surveillance treaty due to non-compliance of Russia towards treaty
The United States (US) has left the Open Skies treaty (OST) for 6 months w.e.f. May 23, 2020 due to
Russia’s non-compliance with the treaty. In this regard, US submitted a notice of its decision to withdraw
from the Treaty on Open Skies to the Treaty Depositories. The treaty was signed in 1992 and came into
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen re-elected for second term; 2 Indian MPs sent congratulatory
video messages
Tsai Ing-wen (63) the current and first female President of Taiwan has been re-elected for a second four-
year term of presidency. A representative of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), took the oath on May
20, 2020. The BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi & Rahul Kaswan sent the congratulatory video messages to her.

WHO Launched ‘COVID-19 Technology Access Pool’ for equal access to Life-saving Tech
The COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) which was proposed by President Carlos Alvarado of
Costa Rica has been launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) during an event co-hosted by
WHO and Costa Rica. The C-TAP was supported by 35 countries (as on May 29, 2020). The aim of this
initiative is to provide access to all for making vaccines, tests, treatments and other health technologies
to fight COVID-19. C-TAP will serve as a sister initiative to the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT)
Accelerator. Also, WHO, Costa Rica and all the co-sponsor countries have also issued a “Solidarity Call to
Action” to join and support the initiative.
India, China hold top military-level talks in Maldo, Ladakh amid May 2020 standoff
The Lieutenant General-level talks were held between India and China at the Border Personnel Meeting
Point in Maldo in the Chushul sector, on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern
Ladakh. The Indian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Harinder Singh, Commander of 14 Corps,
while the Chinese side was headed by Major General Liu Lin, Commander of the Tibet Military District. In
addition to that, ITBP operationalises two newly sanctioned commands in Chandigarh & Guwahati due
to stand off.
ADB forms 8-member panel to find solutions for speedy recovery of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia
The Mandaluyong, Philippines based Asian Development Bank (ADB) has constituted an 8-member high-
level panel of leading experts in economics, finance, and health, moderated by ADB Vice-President Ahmed
M. Saeed, to help ministers, central bank governors, and other senior officials identify solutions for
Southeast Asian economies to quickly recover after the COVID-19 pandemic.
India elected for 8th term as non-permanent member of UN Security Council for 2021 & 2022;
will hold presidency in August, 2021
India was elected unopposed for an 8th term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security
Council (UNSC) for two years (i.e.2021 & 2022) starting January 2021. Mexico, Ireland, Kenya and
Norway were also elected along with India. India’s overall objective during this tenure in the UN Security
Council will be the achievement of N.O.R.M.S: New Orientation for a Reformed Multilateral System &
India’s approach will be guided by “Five S’s”: Samman, Samvad, Sahyog, Shanti & Samriddhi.

According to the annual report on displacement titled “Global Trends- Forced Displacement in 2019″
released by UN refugee agency- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), on global front
the displacement number is 79.5 million (about 1% of world population) or one in every 97 people on
the planet at the end of 2019. Five countries account for two-thirds (68%) of people displaced across
borders: Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.

The headquarter building of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) located at
