Basic Unit Operation

Congratulations on your purchase of a DV Systems ‘B Series’ Rotary Screw Compressor.

In following the guidelines in this manual with respect to installation, maintenance, and service, you should have years
of trouble-free use of your Unit.

The Rotary Screw Compressor Units contain several items which, when working together in concert, provide
uninterrupted compressed air for your application. A brief and simple description of the operation of the Unit is as
follows.

Ø An internal Pressure Transducer senses the pressure in the compressed air system, and decides whether the
Unit should operate or not. The Transducer has two limits, namely a ‘cut-in’ pressure and a ‘cut-out’ pressure. The
‘cut in’ pressure (or below) is the pressure at which the Unit will start. The ‘cut-out’ pressure is the maximum
pressure at which the Unit will build pressure to.
Ø Once the Pressure Transducer senses that there is a need for air, the Electric Motor begins. The Electric Motor is
coupled to the Air End by means of Belts.
Ø The Air End (similar to as noted on the sketch below) contains two large Rotors which, when turned, compress air.
The Rotors turn at velocities dependent on the Unit horsepower and pressure.
Ø The Rotors inside the Air End do not touch, but are separated by a very thin film of oil. It is critical that the Unit have
a) the correct type, b) a sufficient level, and c) clean oil. Oil is a crucial part of the Unit, and can cause irreparable
damage if not maintained.
Ø The initial turning of the Air End and the building of slight pressure causes the Air Inlet Valve to open, allowing the
Unit to ingest air to compress.
Ø Once the Unit reaches maximum pressure, the Air End continues to turn in ‘idle’ mode, but does not compress air.
Ø After a preset interval, and if the pressure in the system does not drop down to the ‘cut-in’ pressure, the Unit will
shut down.
Ø If the pressure in the system drops down to the ‘cut-in’ pressure, the Unit will start automatically.

The proper installation and maintenance are very important in keeping the Compressor running at its optimum.
Though Rotary Screw Compressors can provide a very steady supply of compressed air, they are relatively
unforgiving with regards to the manner in which they are installed and maintained.

Please take the time to read this manual, and to familiarize yourself with the Unit requirements.

Noted below are general Maintenance guidelines based on average working conditions. Should the Unit be worked under extreme
conditions, please contact your DV Systems Distributor for further input. As well, all maintenance/service work must be carried out by
a qualified Technician.

If the operating temperature of the Unit is too low (less than 70°C), condensation will build up in the system and mix with the oil,
causing internal component problems in the Unit. Change the ambient conditions to increase the operating temperature.

If the operating temperature of the Unit is too high (above 85°C), the oil will oxidize and lose it’s properties, this causing internal
damage to components as well. To combat this, the oil must be changed more often than noted below.

Order (1) ‘MK-B57’ Maintenance Kit containing (1) Gallon ‘DEV-3000’ Oil, (2) ‘DSC-603’ Oil Filters, (1) ‘DSC-302’ Air/Oil Separator

Note: For Compressor Units used in an environment where the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C),
the components marked with a ‘ ’ must be changed more frequently, and not as noted below.

Compressor Storage

At times, it may become necessary to store a Compressor Unit for an extended period of time, this because the
site may not be ready, it may be shipped overseas, etc. When storing a Compressor, the following areas must be
addressed:
- the Drive Belts must be loosened off or taken off the assembly, this to prevent any deterioration of the Belts.
- the Air End must have oil added to prevent deterioration of the Rotors, Bearings, etc.
