IGNITE
CAN WE AVOID POLITICS?
TA: 7 min

As you observed, politics may be viewed from various perspectives—as shown by our activity.
The question is, can we avoid politics? Politics may not be as exciting to some people especially those
who are not interested in competition and disagreement. Some people escape from politics as if it's
something that we can avoid. One cannot avoid politics (Department of Political Science, 2014).
Politics is everywhere, every decision we make in our life is politics. The conventional wisdom of
many areas of Political Science is that people act rationally to maximize their personal utility (Peters,
2004).

“MAN BY NATURE IS A POLITICAL ANIMAL”

Since we cannot avoid politics, it can be explained that naturally, politics is an important tool
that separates the human beings from other animals. There are certain characteristics unique to humans
that set them apart from the rest of the creations. (Unit-1 Introduction to the Philosophy of Human
Person, 2017). However, Aristotle, the Father of Political Science said that man naturally is a political
animal. It seems Aristotle believes the man is just like the animals in some ways but is above them in
one distinctive way - politics. Humans are unique in joining together to make deliberative and governing
bodies that seek to improve the ways of life. We weren't created to be loners; we are wired to make a

community and work together. It takes the method of politics to stay society functioning so
that everyone can flourish the maximum amount as possible. Politics for Aristotle is, therefore,
the “master science” that refers to the activity through which humans try to improve their lives and
build the Great Society.

IMPORTANCE OF POLITICAL SCIENCE TO A HUMAN PERSON

Based on our previous discussion that man cannot avoid politics as it is a natural characteristic
of a human person, therefore, humans as we are, we tend to apply politics in our everyday lives. Whether
your concern is about convincing your parents for an additional allowance at school or trying to do
household chores over the weekend so that your parents will allow you to go out with your friends. It's
all about politics. On a larger scale, being able to participate in different issues in the country whether
political, social, or economic through protests or in any medium to gain something, is an exercise of
politics. In these cases, a lot of people with diverse opinions may not completely agree with what you
are fighting for. Thus, Political Science prepares the individual to think more clearly about oneself and
one's relationship with others, to be more careful in one's judgments of the unfamiliar, and to be more
tolerant of diverse opinions thrown in one's path. Political Science aims to educate and develop the
citizenry, the values of civic and political consciousness (Maguigad, 2005).

DID YOU KNOW?

There are many ways that you can use politics and participate in our country’s political
process. It includes voting, campaigning, giving contributions to the campaign of a
candidate, or working as a volunteer during political exercises. You can also do Lobbying
by influencing the formation and implementation of public policy through thorough visits,
telephone calls, letters, and other acts that bring some demands to political leaders. Another
way is by Organizing -by becoming a member or an officer of an organization that has
the goal of bringing up/voicing out concerns- for the government to consider in their
decisions.
How about you? How do you participate in or influence the decision-making of the
government? Share your thoughts……
