Engagement
Module Code 1.0 The Nature of Human Person
Lesson Code 1.1 Introduction
Time Limit 30 minutes

TARGET

TA: 1 min
At the end of this module, the student should be able to:
1. explain the importance of social sciences;
2. discuss the nature of social sciences; and
3. justify whether certain situations belong to social sciences or natural science.

One of the missions of the PSHS system is to offer an

education that is humanistic in spirit, global in perspective,
and patriotic in orientation. Although the PSHS curriculum
emphasizes science and mathematics, the PSHS provides
holistic development of well-rounded individuals. This is the
primary reason why social science subjects are introduced
every year level in the PSHS System.

REMEMBERING…

In your past classes, you have learned about the study of Philippine History, World History,
Political Science, and Economics. Now that you are in Grade 12, you will be studying "Civic
Engagement and Leadership". In this module, you will be learning additional disciplines of Social
Sciences that explain the basic concepts of man, community, society, and culture. With your learnings

NATURAL SCIENCE VIS-À-VIS SOCIAL SCIENCE

NATURAL SCIENCE VIS-A-VIS SOCIAL SCIENCE
IGNITE
TA: 7 min According to an article written by Hasa, natural science is concerned with
the phenomena and objects of nature and the physical world. Natural science
involves comprehension, description, and prediction of natural phenomena using empirical and
observational evidence (Hasa, 2017). Some of the disciplines in Natural sciences are astronomy,
biology, physics, and chemistry. Galileo Galilei, Nicolaus Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin,
and Albert Einstein have contributed so much to the understanding of the natural world. These are just
some of the great scientists in Natural Science that you have probably encountered. While these
scientists aided us in understanding the ways of how the natural world operates, we have another group
of scientists who aided us in understanding man, community, society, and culture.

Imagine if you will travel to all the countries in the world. You will meet different people from
different races and observe how they live their lives. You will be surprised and fascinated by the food,
clothes, and even the language that people speak across borders. Wouldn't it be interesting to know how
their culture has evolved through time? Did you know that you can study other people’s culture, society,
and even their government? This is why Social Science is a very important field of study to help us
understand how human life progressed through time and how closely it is related to our lives. We will
see how, as human beings, have gone through several stages in human development. Social Science
also helps us to acquire the capacity to make interconnections between various subjects and relate it
with our everyday life.

THE ORIGIN OF SOCIAL SCIENCE AND ITS DISCIPLINES

Ancient Greek philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle played a very significant role in the
growth of Social Science. They were the first to ask the questions “What is a human being?” “Who is a
human being?” “What makes up a society?”, “What is culture?” The answers to these questions vary as
new concepts and theories have emerged with the development of human beings. But what exactly are
the Social Sciences? Social Science is a vast field that is concerned with human society and the
relationships among individuals within it (Hasa, 2017). The major social science disciplines
are Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Political Science,
Psychology, and Sociology. These social sciences offer theories and concepts to understand man,
community, society, and culture.

SOCIETY AND CULTURE

You have learned social science and its importance in understanding society and culture. But
what are society and culture? These two concepts are very essential as you tackle each of the disciplines
and how they are being explained using different perspectives. You will be learning more about the
society and culture in separate topics in this subject. Sociologist Ian Robertson viewed and described
society as a group of interacting individuals sharing the same territory and participating in common

Social Science 6/ Page 2 of 6

culture (Robertson, 1981). According to Atmosfera et. al, society has always been there and will always
be there, affecting man and being affected by man. Therefore, man is born into society and dies in
society. Even after man dies, society persists. It worth notetaking that being human is already given,
but "becoming" humans occurs in the context of society. Culture, on the other hand, includes the group's
shared practices, values, beliefs, norms, and artifacts. The basic insight of sociology is that human
behavior is shaped by the groups to which people belong (society) and by the social interaction that
takes place (culture) within those groups (Robertson, 1981).

The diversity of perspectives and debates among social scientists in explaining and
understanding man, community, society, and culture will surely excite you as you progress in the
succeeding lessons.

GRADED ASSESSMENT

Test 1. Found in the next page is a table with situations in the first column. Identify whether the given
situation is part of natural science or social science by writing NS for Natural Science and SS for
Social Science in the second column. In the third column, write a short justification or explanation for
your answer. 1 point is given per item.
