What is booting?
When you switch on a computer, it takes time in starting the operating system to load all the
computer programs – this process is called booting.

Desktop Screen
The Desktop is the first screen you see after booting.

Parts of a Desktop screen are:
1. Icons
2. Start button
3. Taskbar

Parts of a Desktop Screen
Icons: Small pictures on the desktop used for opening application/programs.
Example: Recycle bin icon and Computer icon.
Taskbar: This is the long bar at the bottom of the desktop screen.
It has two corners, left corner has a Start button. Right corner has a notification area.

Start button:
It is located on the extreme left of the taskbar.
When you click on the Start button,
it opens a list of all the computer programs.
This is called the Start menu.
It can be used to change the computer settings
or shutdown the computer.

Opening an application by selecting an Icon on the desktop:
Desktop icons are used to open software programs, etc. To open the program, click the left
mouse button twice very quickly. This is called
Double-clicking.
3. Click Accessories
Opening an application using the start menu:

1. Click on the Start button.


2. Click on All programs.
3. Select Accessories. Using Windows 7
4. Click on Calculator.

Once the Calculator window is open.


It will appear as shown here.
The close button is placed at the upper-right corner of the Calculator window.

When you want to close this window, click on it.

Shutting down a computer pg # 16

Before shutting down your computer, close all the applications and windows. After you
have finished your work on the computer, always remember to shut down the computer
correctly.

Steps to shut down a computer:

Windows 7
Click on the Start button → Click on the shutdown option
Windows 10
Click on the Start button → Press Power button → Click Shut down

NEVER force shut down your computer directly from the power button, CPU or UPS.
