The Causes and Effects of Cyberbullying

1
Humans are living in the world where people bully and get bullied. 2According to Crichton
(2014), “cyberbullying happens for many of the same reasons as any other types of bullying, but
it may be even more appealing because it can be done anonymously”. 3Cyberbullying is an
action of using the social media platforms to bully others and in many cases, behind fake
profiles. 4By using cell phones or any other devices such as computers and tablets to connect to
the Internet, a large number of individuals have been spending their time bullying other people.
5
These are some of the reasons why cyberbullying takes place.

6
According to Jumali (2015), there are two kinds of people who are likely to bully: the socially
active people and the socially inactive people. 7Thinking the control is in their hands is the main
reason why socially active people may bully other people. 8It makes them feel powerful as it is
also a way to maintain their popularity. 9On the other hand, the socially inactive people may
bully others as they feel that it is a chance for them to fit in and to prove that they are not weak.
10 11
Like the socially active people, bullying also makes them feel powerful. These reasons can
also be referred to cyberbullying.
12
Besides that, revenge motivates some individuals to commit cyberbullying. Being victims of
13

bullying themselves makes them think harassing other people online is natural as they feel
14 15
others deserve to be bullied too. Some individuals cyber bully just to boost their egos. They
16
harass others to make themselves feel good being in control. Apart from that, attention is what
17
some people want. They are mostly victims of neglect and have never been appreciated by
18
their parents. Other than that, some cyberbullies also starve for the recognition of being
powerful figures. 19They do it to remind others of their social status which they believe are lower
than theirs.

20 21
Like any other types of bullying, the effects of cyberbullying are somewhat the same. For
cyberbullies, a bad reputation in the future is highly possible if they get caught. 22If news of their
action went viral on the internet, it will not just affect them but their friends and families as well.
23
Moreover, since cyberbullying is also an act of crime under the laws, the bullies might even
end up in prison. 24Likewise, cyberbully victims also pay the price. 25The most common effect is
26
depression. The overwhelming negative feelings felt such as anger and sadness could lead
them to alcohol and drug abuse. 27Some victims would skip school for fear of being mocked and
ridiculed. 28They would feel difficult to mingle as they are afraid other people might laugh or pick
29
on them in school. Furthermore, it is also common for victims of cyber bully to start doubting
everyone and view them negatively. 30In turn, they would prefer to be alone and lock themselves
in their room.

31 32
To conclude, cyber bullying is a great danger to the society. Although there may be reasons
behind the action, there is never an excuse to commit cyberbullying as it causes a lot of harm
33
for both the bullies and the victims. In other words, cyberbullying is a serious worldwide issue
that needs to be prevented.
