General purpose : To persuade
Specific purpose : To persuade my audience to beware of online chatting applications.

ourselves from sharing too much information or face the consequences.

INTRODUCTION

I. (Attention material) Technology nowadays has made the way of communication become
easier. It provides various applications in order to keep people communicating.
Obviously, chat rooms are common virtual environments in which synchronous
interactions occur in real time.
II. Online chat rooms an online service that provides a venue for communities of users
with a common interest to communicate in real time.
III. They allow you to meet different kinds of people.
IV. (Tie to the audience) So how do these online chat rooms exist? Have you ever heard
about Compuserve’s CB Simulator? The truth is we are living in the Snapchat, Whatsapp
and Skype era. In the early 1980, Compuserve’s CB Simulator was one of the first chat
rooms that were introduced to the public.
V. Sometimes, it's just easier to open up to people that we meet online, but should we?
VI. Today, I hope to persuade each of you to always use the medium of communication
in a manner that somehow will protect your personal information.
VII. (Thesis and Preview) The truth is chat rooms can accommodate a large number of
people, but little did you know there are 500,000 online predators waiting behind the chat
rooms?

(Transition: Let’s look more closely at the risks posed by online chat rooms.)

BODY

NEED
I. The truth is online chatting is a way by which people from around the world communicate
with each other by writing messages through a keyboard which are seen instantly by all
the people present in the chat room.
A. (Statement of Need for Action) However, there are a lot of consequences of
online chat rooms specifically.

1. (Description of Problem) In my point of view, you might feel safe and put
your trust in expressing your feelings in online chat rooms but people
online may try to take advantage of you whenever you feel vulnerable.

a. Vulnerability is a state of emotional exposure that comes with a

certain degree of uncertainty whereby it involves a feeling of dread
about being emotionally open with others.
b. It’s letting them see inside of you, into those dark and dusty
corners of your heart no one knows about.
c. It’s telling them things you’ve never told someone else or could
never imagine saying out loud.
d. It’s feeling so comfortable around them that you don’t care if the
two of you just sit in silence.
e. It seems cheerier for having a supportive audience from the online
chat rooms. However, meeting so many different personas in a
short amount of time can negatively impact us.
f. But sometimes life just doesn’t work like that. It may at first, and
it’s great knowing you have someone to can tell absolutely
anything to, no matter how crazy or insane it sounds. It’s like
finding your missing puzzle piece in life.
g. Then you blink and it’s all gone.

B. Moving on to the next point, the online predators are internet users who exploit
children and teens for sexual and violent purposes.

1. These online predators are looking for child grooming, engage in sexual
activities, unwanted exposure of materials and pictures, online harassment and
threats which cause the feel of fear and embarrassment.
a. Let's look deeply at the character of these online predators.
b. An online predators builds a false trust and fake relationship with
the child and family of child to win their trust with a purpose of
sexual abuse.
c. This is what we known as pedophilia erotica which may explain
the children’s lover.
d. However, there are a lot of parents out there who are not aware of
these online predators as the children are being taught to respect
and obey the adult.

C. On the other hand, online chat rooms may also involve cyber bullying.
1. We can’t avoid the fact that cyberbullying is rapidly becoming a huge problem
with young teens and young adults. Cyberbullying as opposed to traditional
bullying, uses technology and social networks to harass, humiliate or threaten
someone.
a. These cyberbullying includes sending insulting emails, messages
or texts to another person using any communication device are
common ways of cyberbullying in this modern world.
b. Do you even know that, there are some cases that involves
suicide just because of cyber bullying?
c. It includes some of the more popular cases such as The Amanda
Todd Cases which happened between 2012.
d. This case has gained its popularity as In October 2012, ABC
News reported that the video Amanda Todd had posted to
YouTube had been viewed more than 17 million times. In the video
entitled “My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm,” the
British Columbia teenager uses flash cards to tell about her
experiences of being blackmailed and bullied. A little over a month
after posting the video on September 7, 2012, Amanda hanged
herself in her home on October 10, 2012.

2. Cyber bullying is a serious case that everyone needs to be aware of.

a. According to the statistics by panda security, 38 percent of people
experience cyberbullying on social media platforms daily.
b. 25 percent of students who are cyberbullied turn to self-harm to
cope.
c. It is even worse when 33 percent of youth across the world
experience cyberbullying online.

(Transition: From all those stated above, we can conclude how dangerous online chat rooms
can negatively impact someone’s life. So what’s the solution?)

SATISFACTION

II. There are several ways that you can do this in order to avoid yourself from the dangers of
online chat rooms.

A. Most importantly, never say anything in the chat rooms that you should not
expose to the public.

1. Personal information such as name, home address, telephone number

and even password should not be given to anyone in the chat rooms.

a. This is because that personal information might help the hacker or

anonymous figure out your actual identity.
b. It will cause serious harm to your security and even the peace of
your life.
c. Those anonymous may use our name, address and phone
number in order to phishing scams on us.
d. The scenario might get even worse when they put it on sale on the
Dark Web.
e. These can include the leaked passwords, credit card numbers and
you might lose some of the money from the bank account.

B. In order to keep yourself safe, never ever arrange to meet someone in person that
you have met online.

1. You might feel safe having them as online friends, but they might be a
serious threat to your safety in the real world.

a. Please stick in your mind that people you meet online may not be
who they say they are.
b. They might be pretending to be someone else behind the screen
but in reality they were someone who is older or might be online
predators.
c. You can meet them in person but do not go alone. Please bring
your friend along.
d. Just make sure the place that you are going is familiar so that you
can easily ask for help if something bad happens to you.

2. Likewise, keep yourself away from the online predators.

a. You need to beware whenever they started to asks you to talk

about sexual acts or requests you to engage with them offline.
b. They also might ask you personal questions relating to your
physical appearance such as your body weight and height.
c. It's more safe to stay in the public chat rooms rather than dragging
the conversation to the private chat rooms.

(Transition: Although it may seem not harmful, just trust your gut. If you feel like you are being
pressured to meet or give personal information, talk to a friend about it and immediately stop all
contact with that person. Afterall, let us go through what the impact is by doing those
prevention.)
VISUALIZATION

III. We might not avoid the harm of using online chat rooms but we can make online chat
rooms become safer to be used by different groups of age.

A. We can not deny the fact that we have moved a lot of our social interactions to
the online chat rooms where we can nearly get anything just with clicks or
pushes.

1. However, by having online chat rooms it is easier for us to stay connected

with our valuable friends.

B. But from a different perspective, when we are too socializing in online chat rooms,
this will make us spend less time with reality, especially our friends and family members.
1. We might feel safe expressing our emotions and even our problems with
the online community.
a. Even though the majority of users online really wish to help, we
will never know their true intentions toward us.
b. There might be those who fake in an effort to win over other’s
trust.
c. Oversharing your information may cause your personal reputation
to be at stake.
d. The Internet can be an extremely useful tool for young people but
it can also bring trouble including exposure to sexual predators.
2. Stop communicating in the virtual world, you will actually have the opportunity
to meet people and develop real relationships with others instead of the virtual
world relationships.

(Transition: Now, you know all the bad and good impact of online chat rooms in our life.)

CONCLUSION

ACTION

I. In conclusion, online chatting might pose a reputation risk, therefore we need to control
ourselves from sharing too much or facing the consequences.
II. Be aware of those who asking about your personal information because the main
drawback of chat communication is that people cannot see each other and don’t actually
know each other.
III. Just imagine how you would interact and communicate with your real friends if internet
chat rooms ceased to exist in the world.
IV. Online chatting is fun! But at the same time, the same place can be a dark and dingy
alley infested with online predators without you expecting it.
V. Do you dare to see our next generation being destroyed with these online predators that
are socially active in the online chat rooms?
VI. I guess it is a big no right?
VII. They might listen to and empathize with your problem but they are perverted adults that
pose a danger to ourselves and even our young generation.
