NO MOTHER SHOULD DIE IN PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH is the vision of the

World Health Organization (WHO) that has become one of their priority as of 2021.

The Sorsogon Provincial Health Office has recorded about 136 cases of maternal and
21 neonatal deaths among its constituents in 2021, numbers higher than the previous
year’s record. In 2020, the John Hopkins Program for International Education in
Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO), forged a partnership with the provincial
government of Sorsogon to address maternal and neonatal deaths in the province. In
the ensuing years, the mortality among mothers during pregnancy and childbirth
significantly decreased.

With only a limited budget, Jhpiego was able to provide assistance to the Provincial
Health Office (PHO) through a series of trainings for healthcare providers to equip them
with skills in proper management and handling of maternal and neonatal emergencies in
the province. Moreover, they have also provided assistance in capacitating health
facilities in the province to qualify the standard for addressing maternal health
emergencies including the provision of Cardiotocography (CTG) and fixing the referral
system of patients among health facilities.

Personally, I find the PHO of Sorsogon admirable for having this kind of initiative in
addressing the issues regarding the increase of maternal and neonatal mortality rates in
their province. This initiative did not only allow them to address the problem for what it
currently is but it also allowed them to decrease the maternal and neonatal mortality
rate in the future, and this is by having their healthcare workers undergo seminars from
their international partner JHPIEGO. Through this training, their healthcare workers
became even more equipped to address emergencies both maternal and neonatal. This
is evidenced by the earned reputation of the province not just in the Bicol region but
also in the entire nation for their best practices in delivering quality standard maternal
health care.
