Year 11 Physics — Unit 1 and 2 Revision #2

1. This question is about nuclear physics.

a. Compare and explain the penetrating ability of the three types of ionising radiation we
have studied (alpha, beta and gamma). (3marks).

b. Contrast the strong nuclear force with the weak nuclear force. (2marks).

2. This question is about calorimetry.

A 100g copper mass is submerged in a beaker containing 100g of water. If the initial temperature
of the water was 25oC and the initial temperature of the copper was 70oC:
a. describe the direction of energy flow when the copper is submerged in the water
assuming no energy is lost to the surroundings. (1 mark).

b. predict how the temperature of the water will change when the copper mass is
submerged in the beaker. (1 mark).

c. calculate the final the temperature of the water-copper system assuming the energy flow
from the copper to the water is 100% efficient. The specific heat capacity of copper is
390Jkg-1oC-1 and the specific heat capacity of water can be found in your Data Booklet (3
marks).

d. Comment on whether 100% efficiency would be achieved if this situation was recreated in
real life. (2 marks).

3. This question is about force and work.

The graph below describes the force acting on a box over a displacement of 10m.

a. Analyse the graph to identify the force applied to the box for the first 5m. (1 mark).
b. Using information from the graph, determine the work done by the force for a
displacement of 10m. (2 mark).

c. If the box had a mass of 5kg, calculate the acceleration for the first 4m. (2 mark).

d. What is the velocity of the box after 4m if we assume it started at rest? (2 mark).

4. This question is about light.

The spectrum below describes the wavelength of light for different colours.

Perform calculations to compare the frequency of red light and blue light assuming it is
moving through a vacuum. Remember, there is important information about light in your Data
Booklet. (4 marks).

5. This question is about electricity and electric circuits.

A simple circuit is constructed that consists of a 1200Ω light bulb and a 240V supply.
a. draw a circuit diagram to show how you would connect an ammeter and voltmeter so that
the current through and potential difference across the lightbulb could be measured. (2
marks).

b. Calculate the current through the ammeter. (2 marks).

c. Determine the number of electrons through the light bulb in 10 seconds. (3 marks).

d. Calculate the energy dissipated from this circuit in 10 seconds. (2 marks).
