Oral Praxis:
Look Back

- I will look back on a conversation with an 80-year-old resident who reflected on her life

and the concept of death and dying.

To elaborate

- This client spoke on how she is getting older and every day she is not sure if she can

make it through. She recalls her family and showed me pictures of her as well as fond

memories of going to Billy Graham Crusades.

- She references Christianity a lot and how she hopes to see even me when we get to

heaven.

- In reflection, at first, I didn’t know how to respond to someone talking about death as

people often died in my life, and I was forced to just move on.

- I tried to shift the focus on the things she was proud of and recall the good memories as

the resident reminisced on her past, feeling a sense of accomplishment rather than

focussing on regrets.

- She expressed that I am like a light in the world always bringing her up when she is

down, encouraging her to move beyond current circumstances.

To analyze

- Erik Erickson’s Psychological Development Theory highlights that mature adults aged

65+ are at the final stage of life (Maree, 2022).

- People are confronted by the idea of dying and their mortality, reflecting on whether their

life was successful or not (Maree, 2022).

- This is unique to the individual, especially the way they were nurtured, raised, and

educated as well as the environment and culture they grew up in (Maree, 2022).

- In reference to the situation, it is apparent that the resident is meeting the developmental

milestones

- The Community Health Nursing Standard met in this situation is health maintenance and

professional relationships as I used the relationship to establish to help maintain and

support the client, especially in this transition period that she believes she is going

through (Community Health Nurses of Canada, 2019).

- Another theory applied was Paterson and Zerdad’s theory of Humanistic Nursing, as I

offered myself authentically and just decided to sit by and listen to the resident story

(Ghanbari-Afra et al., 2022).

To Revise

- I felt as though I did well in talking about death and dying for the first time.

- Thoughts of “to speak or not to speak” really bothered me throughout the interaction.

- I took the approach of asking open-ended questions that would allow the resident to

openly share their experiences and reflect on themselves.

- What I didn’t take into account is the cultural aspects and impacts of systemic violence

that may impact an individual’s views on death and dying

- I would like to improve on providing better Trauma and Violence Care and developing

my communication skills to match
