SAFE N’ HAPPY PERIODS

INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW
Safe N' Happy Periods (SNHP) is a non-profit working towards creating shame-free, pain-free & joyful
periods for girls and women through a combined approach of workshops, awareness campaigns, and
pad donation drives.

SNHP is a flagship project of AMODINI Foundation, a registered trust under Mumbai Public Trust 1960
having 80G under Income Tax Act.

The primary focus is girls aged 10-18 years old through school. To date, SNHP has created postive shift
in the lives of over 25,000 Girls/ Women & Men with our Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)
education and reached over 5,000 girls with MHM products. As a social enterprise, SNHP has the
unique benefit of being registered as a Trust whose raison d’etre is to serve the common good, give
platforms to girls/women to share their PERIOD concerns, collectively working out solutions in the
present context and giving dignity to PERIODS. Due to this classification, Supreme is a donor-
supported and volunteer supported organization.

CONTEXT, CHALLENGE
& SOLUTION
CONTEXT
As natural of an occurrence as menstruation is for half of the world’s population, it is
estimated that each year, many girls miss school due to their cycle, or withdraw from
school altogether. The lack of access to sanitary pads adds to the burden.
Furthermore, global research and our own research have documented menstruating
girls’ experiences of shame, fear, and confusion. The challenges girls face attempting
to manage their menstruation with insufficient information on their bodies, a lack of
social support, and ongoing social and hygiene taboos leads to a vicious cycle.

CHALLENGE
To combat the issues stemming from lack of education on menstrual hygiene
management (MHM) and cultural norms, SMHP has created a comprehensive
workshop module for which often the school teachers are not also trained.

SOLUTION
Our In House team has developed a MHM curriculum to be imparted as
workshop/information sessions with girls, boys, men, and women. The program also
has a provision to provide consistent menstruation support for women and girls
through online and in-person meet.

METHODOLOGY
TOOLS TAUGHT FOR DEEPER EMOTIONAL RELEASE

Periods often brings along a deep and lasting impressions on the young hearts,
memories that bring negativity. In order to release those memories and feel free and
liberated, we took the girls and teachers through the following:

1) TOOL - CATHARSIS
The students were asked to release all their negative memories, emotions like fear,
anxiety, shame, guilt, resentment and other emotions which do not serve them
positively. The focus was on Periods, but the process helped them to release their
other unwanted emotions and memories and helped them feel the lightness.

The students and teachers experienced the CATHARSIS tool/process individually

during the session. Their experience and feedback was phenomenal and we hope
that they would be able to practise it even when we facilitators are not around.

2) TOOL - SEGMENT INTENDING (SI)

A beautiful tool by Abraham Hicks and taught to the facilitators by Mr. Manoj Lekhi
was shared by the students and teachers. The SI process is about being in Gratitude
moment to moment, irrespective of whatever good or not so good is happening in our
lives.

Through this, they all could release whatever was troubling them or not needed
anymore. The small process (hardly takes 60 sec) worked wonders for them and can
be integrated by putting alarms after every 90 mins. In case of students not having
mobile phones, the SI was suggested to be done after every academic Period.

AND KIDS LOVED IT!

IMPACT
ASSESSMENT
The impact of the workshops is understood from our FEEDBACK machanism. Well-
designed survey forms were distributed to the workshop participants (both girls and
female teachers) before the workshop. The survey form had questions to be answered
before the workshop began. These questions were primarily designed to understand
their understanding of Periods, their perception about it, the challenges they face
including physical, mental, emotional, accessibilty of Sanitary Pads, Hygiene &
Sanitation ecosytem in school and homes, etc.

The second part of the survey was a structured feedback to help us understand thier
overall feedback on our workshop and questions if they had.

LESSONS LEARNED
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

We realized that a little more time is needed to interact with groups. And we need to
be connecte with the participants virtually on regular intervals to keep them
motivated, be regular with their Asana practise and answering their queries

CHANGES IMPLEMENTED BASED ON LESSONS LEARNED

We are currently working out a Calendar for vistual meetings through Video
Conferencing and ZOOM. We will be connecting with the School Authorities to
design the calendar based on mutual convenience and availability.

CONCLUSION
RECAP OF KEY POINTS
Menstrual Health & Hygiene Management is a critical phase in a young girl’s/ women
life. Through a sustained approach of education, awareness, practise of Asanas, and
hand holding, a major lasting positive shift can be brought in the lives of the young
girls. This will make them healthy, confident and have a better maternal health in the
future.

The male teaching staff supported more then we anticipated. In future, they can be
included in this journey.
