STANDARD OPERATING PRACTICES – ROLLING BALL TACK TESTER

SCOPE:
THIS DOCUMENT DESCRIBES THE OPERATION OF THE ROLLING BALL TACK TESETER.

PRINCIPLE:
This is an instrument to test the tackiness of pressure sensitive adhesive coated on the film, tape or
labels.

A steel ball is allowed to be rolled down from a specific starting point on the grooved path inclined at a
specific angle to the base of the test platform. The pressure sensitive tape is affixed (tacky side up) just
beneath the end of the inclined grooved path of the platform. The rolling ball attains maximum velocity
at touch down, and rolls above the tacky surface which retards its motion by virtue of resistance offered
by the adhesive till it stops the ball. The shorter the distance traveled the higher is the tackiness of the
adhesive coating.

PROCEDURE:
1. Place the Instrument on a rigid working platform.

2. Behind the slop, you will see a Spirit Leveling Unit with 3 Spirit levels.

3. Adjust the leveling screws (found beneath the Tester) to center all the bubbles.

4. 2 Strips of 2 inch width each are provided along with the Instrument.

5. Remove 2-3 layers of Tape from the Roll sample.

6. Now fix the P.S. Tape/Label in such a way that the adhesive coated surface faces upwards. The end of
each side of the sample has to be fixed beneath the Strip with a piece of Tape.

7. Clean the Rolling Balls with a suitable solvent. Preferably the same as used in the adhesive

Formulation or M.EK. N-Heptane or Acetone.

8. Allow it to dry in Oven at about 65-70° C for about 15 minutes. Let it cool down to normal

Temperature.

9. Prepare 2 sets of Test Samples as per step # 8 and place I sample in position just below the Inclined
Plane such that the Coated Tacky Surface is facing upwards. 10. Put a clean Rolling Ball in the Ball Pit
which is on the Release Lever. The Release Lever is found on the top of the Inclined Plane.

11. Press the Release Lever to release the Ball. The Ball will roll down the 'V' groove on the Inclined

Plane. The Ball will attain its Max. Velocity at touchdown and will roll above the Tacky surface in

the direction parallel to the Metal Scale.

12. The Rolling Ball will stop at some location due to the Drag Resistance offered by the Tackiness of the
Adhesive Coated surface.

13. Measure this distance with the T provided with this Instrument.

14. Repeat Step # 15 with the remaining 4 Balls. Take a total of 5 readings and take

15. Repeat Step #16 with the other sample on Strip and take the Average of both.

16. The unit for this Test is millimeters (mm).
