Mental Disorder
• A mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by
clinically significant disturbance in individual’s
cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that
reflects a dysfunction in the psychological,
biological, or developmental processes
underlying mental functioning.

• Mental disorders are usually associated with


significant distress or disability in social,
occupation or other important activities.

• An expectable or culturally approved response
to a common stressor or loss, such as the
death of a loved one, is not a mental diosrder.

WHO ICD 10 (impairment, disability,
handicapped)
• Impairment – any loss or abnormality of psychological,
physiological or anatomical structure or function

• Disability – any restriction or lack (resulting from an


impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner
or within the range considered normal for a human being

• Handicapped – a disadvantage for a given individual that


limits or prevents the fulfillment of a role that is normal
