What is Mental
Health?
Is a “state of well being” in
which the individual realizes
his or her own abilities, can
cope with the normal stresses
of life, can work productively
and fruitfully, and is able to
make a contribution to his or
her community.
Well-being
• The state of being
comfortable, healthy, or
happy.
Mental Well-being
• describes your mental state - how you
are feeling and how well you can cope
with day-to-day life.
• Our mental wellbeing is dynamic. It can
change from moment to moment, day to
day, month to month or year to year.
Reasons why we should pay attention to our mental
health:
• Poor mental health makes us more vulnerable to certain
physical health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and type
2 diabetes
• Nurturing our mental health can also help prevent the
development of mental illnesses
• When our mental health is good, we are better able to cope
with the difficult times in our lives.
• Good mental health enables us to work more productively and
reach our full potential.
• Good mental health enables us to make meaningful
contributions to our family, to our community and to society.
What does a good mental health looks like?
If you have good mental wellbeing, you are able to:

• Recognise the good in yourself, such as your positive


attributes and achievements you have made.
• Feel and express a range of emotions.
• Feel engaged with the world around you.
• Live and work productively.
• Cope with the stresses of daily life and manage times of
change and uncertainty.
