Good morning ma’am!
Before we start our lesson for this morning,
I’m going to show a pictures and you’ll

Okay very good! Our topic for today is all
about the lantern festival. What does
lantern festival means? Ma’am lantern festival is a modern
technology is often used in making the
parols for the festival.
Very good ! Today, more than half of the
countries in the Asian region partake in the
annual celebration of the lantern festival.
So what about the spring lantern festival?
Ma’am it is an annual Chinese festival.

The Spring Lantern Festival is celebrated


every fifteenth day of the first month of the
Chinese lunar calendar. And do you know
class that the sky lanterns are the most
common type of lanterns used during the
Lantern Festival.

What do you think they do during the


festival? Ma’am houses and streets are decorated
with bright colorful lanterns which contain
questions and riddles written on them.
That’s right! If the riddle is answered

What do you think about the Yi Peng
Festival? Ma’am is a lantern festival celebrated by
the people of Northern Thailand also
known as the Lanna people
Exactly! Yi peng stands for “two full moon.”
and refers to day of the full moon on the
second month of the Lanna lunar calendar
during which the festival is celebrated.

We have different kinds of Lanna-style


lantern such as khom tew, khom kwan,
khom pat, and khom loi. What do you think
about khom tew? Ma’am it is a small cup-shaped lantern
commonly used during religious rituals.
Very good! It is made out of brightly colored
paper and has a lighted candle attached at
the bottom of the structure.

How about khom kwan?


Ma’am it is another kind of Thai lantern. It
is a hanging lantern which can be crafted
in different sizes and shapes.
Precisely! This lantern has many shapes
e.g. star shape, basket shape.

Can you still follow class?


Yes ma’am!

What do you think about khom pat?


Ma’am it is a cone-shaped Thai lantern
which is generally made of mulberry
paper.
Exactly! The shape of the lantern is similar
to a cone with two layers. There is no
external pattern, but inside there is the
pattern that related to Buddhism.

How about the khom loi?


Ma’am it is the most common type of sky
lantern used during festivals. It is made of
mulberry paper and thin bamboo
branches.
Very good! The main structure is made of
bamboo branch, cover by kite-making
paper or mulberry paper.

Lastly, what famous festival do the


Kapampangan celebrated every
December? Ma’am it is the Giant Lantern Festival.

Exactly! It is an annual Filipino festival


celebrated every December in the city of
San Fernando Pampanga, Philippines.
The festival features the grand competition
of huge, locally made lanterns.
